Police investigate early morning shooting

Police are investigating a shooting that occurred about 1:20 a.m. in the parking lot of the Cross Town Tavern, 1910 Haskell Ave.

A Lawrence Police officer reported hearing gunshots coming from the parking lot of the tavern around 1:20 a.m., Capt. Tarik Khatib said. The officer investigated and found George Alfred Briscoe, 21, Kansas City, Kan., in the parking lot. Briscoe was suffering from several gunshot wounds and was transferred to a Kansas City area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

A suspect car was seen leaving the area. Mil-Spec security officers reported seeing the car pull into the Edgewood Homes apartment complex, 1600 Haskell Ave. Officers searched the area and took into custody Preston Gardenhire, 31, Topeka, and Erica Chamberlain, 35, Lawrence, Khatib said.

Gardenhire was booked into the Douglas County Jail on the charge of aggravated battery. Chamberlain was booked into the Douglas County Jail on the charge of aiding a felon.

Lawrence Police officers and detectives are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
