Wichita ? Cool, wet weather has slowed the Kansas wheat harvest, but a few dry parts of the state have been able to get some crops in.

The rains have mostly skirted Barber County, where the harvest was in full swing Monday.

Alan Meyers at the OK Co-op Grain Co. in Kiowa reported about two-thirds of the harvest is done there, despite a few short weather delays. Meyers said wheat protein is good and running above 12 percent.

In its first harvest report of the season, Kansas Wheat reported Monday that Caldwell took in its first loads of wheat on Wednesday. It has 110,000 bushels in the Farmers Co-op Grain Co. elevator there so far, but rains over the weekend will keep farmers out of fields for a couple of days. Test weights harvest averaged 59 pounds per bushel.

In Meade, the elevator reported taking in 180,000 bushels so far. The Meade Co-op Elevator & Supply reported that it started on Thursday and test weights have been high.

Kansas Wheat reports that the wheat crop in the Ulysses area has been stressed by drought that has not entirely broken in southwest Kansas. The Garden City Co-op reported that its Ulysses elevator got some wheat on Saturday, but none on Sunday.

But with rain moving across the state on Monday, wheat harvest activity was expected to be intermittent this week.
