Five Firebirds selected to all-league team

Five Free State High baseball players have been named to the All-Sunflower League team as selected by league coaches.

Two other Firebirds were tapped for the second team and Mike Hill, who guided Free State to the league championship with an 11-0 record, was named coach of the year.

The Firebirds’ first-teamers are second baseman Jordan Dreiling, third baseman John Wilson, catcher E.J. Swanson, designated hitter Cody Kukuk and pitcher Caleb Gress. Kukuk was a freshman. The other four were seniors.

Both of Free State’s second-team selections – shortstop Hunter Scheib and right fielder Alex Hardman – were also seniors.

Free State center fielder Adam Rock earned honorable mention as did four Lawrence High players – shortstop Aaron Rea, third baseman Clint Pinnick and pitchers Tom Schuh and Dorian Green.

Lee Ridenhour, a pitcher/outfielder from Shawnee Mission West who has signed a letter of intent with Kansas University, was named player of the year.
