American League Roundup: Sabathia steamrolls Twins

Orioles hand Red Sox rare loss at Fenway Park

Indians 1, Twins 0

Cleveland – C.C. Sabathia pitched a five-hitter for his seventh career shutout, extending the Twins’ season-high losing streak to six games.

Sabathia (4-8) didn’t allow a baserunner after the fourth inning, striking out five without a walk in his second shutout of the season.

The left-hander retired the last 17 in a row and was helped by some bad baserunning by the Twins.

Blue Jays 3, Mariners 1

Toronto – Dustin McGowan pitched his third career complete game, and Vernon Wells and Brad Wilkerson each homered to lead the Blue Jays to a speedy victory over Seattle.

McGowan (5-4) retired the final 10 batters as the Blue Jays needed just 2 hours, 2 minutes to hand the Mariners their seventh loss in nine games.

Orioles 10, Red Sox 6

Boston – Aubrey Huff matched his career high with four hits, including a tying two-run single, and Baltimore came from behind twice to hand the Red Sox just their second home loss in 17 games.

Baltimore overcame homers by Manny Ramirez and J.D. Drew.

Tigers 6, White Sox 4

Detroit – Miguel Cabrera’s go-ahead two-run single in the fifth inning helped the Detroit Tigers snap the White Sox’s seven-game winning streak.

Trailing, 2-1, the Tigers scored three times in the fifth off Jose Contreras (6-4) to take a lead they wouldn’t give up.

Angels 6, Rays 1

Anaheim, Calif. – Garret Anderson and Vladimir Guerrero each hit two-run home runs.

Anderson helped Los Angeles jump on Tampa Bay as the Angels scored four runs in the first inning.

Jered Weaver (6-6), who has won four of his last five starts, held the Rays to three hits over the first seven innings before giving up a solo homer to Gabe Gross in the eighth.

Yankees 3, Athletics 1

Oakland, Calif. – Chien-Ming Wang ended the worst stretch of his career with his first win in seven starts, taking advantage of an early lead and an insurance run on Melky Cabrera’s solo homer in the ninth inning.

The Yankees staked Wang to a 2-0 lead in the first on RBI singles by Alex Rodriguez and Jason Giambi.
