Raiders win Emporia tournament

Pitcher Caleb Gress allowed just one hit, an infield single, as Lawrence’s Raiders defeated Newton, 2-0, in the championship game of the Sam Ellis Classic at Soden’s Grove.

Matthew Abel’s two-run single in the fourth inning plated Jake Green and Alex Hardman with the only runs in the Legion baseball tournament title game.

“He was carving them up,” Raiders coach Shaun Edmondson said of Gress. “He struck out the side in the first, and that set the tone for the rest of the game. The defense made plays behind him. It was a good championship game.”

The Raiders defeated Hutchinson, 12-4, in a run-rule-shortened semifinal. Drew Hulse struck out seven and allowed six hits. Ben Wilson and Travis Sanders homered, while Alex Hardman had a two-run double. Wilson homered in his fourth consecutive game.

In the semifinals, the Raiders scored seven runs in the first inning off Andale High’s David Holman, a first-round pick by the Atlanta Braves in last week’s major-league baseball draft.

“We had a real patient approach. He walked some guys, and we had timely hits off him,” Edmondson said.

The Raiders (6-0) will travel to Coffeyville on Wednesday for a doubleheader starting at 6 p.m.
