AP tally: Obama clinches Democratic nomination

Barack Obama effectively clinched the Democratic presidential nomination Tuesday, based on an Associated Press tally of convention delegates, becoming the first black candidate ever to lead his party into a fall campaign for the White House.
Campaigning on an insistent call for change, Obama outlasted former first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton in a historic race that sparked record turnout in primary after primary, yet exposed deep racial divisions within the party.
The AP tally was based on public commitments from delegates as well as more than a dozen private commitments. It also included a minimum number of delegates Obama was guaranteed even if he lost the final two primaries in South Dakota and Montana later in the day.
The 46-year-old first-term senator will face Sen. John McCain of Arizona in the fall campaign to become the 44th president.
Clinton was ready to concede that her rival had amassed the delegates needed to triumph, according to officials in her campaign. These officials said the New York senator did not intend to suspend or end her candidacy in a speech Tuesday night in New York. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they had not been authorized to divulge her plans.

There are many rumors floating around about a videotape in Karl Rove's possession that purports to have both of the Obamas engaging in talk that, according to the rumors, will sink his nomination. The further rumors are that the Obama people have a copy of it too and want it leaked to the media as soon as they can after he has secured the nomination so that damage control can be immediately undertaken, while the Republicans want to hold off and use it as an October Surprise. Conversely, the Clinton people, who purportedly don't have it but are familiar with its contents, want it released ASAP so as to derail the Obama nomination before it's secured. It's all rumor, but allegedly comes from very high-placed sources. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, it's a hoot that while all this is going on Fox News is, at present, the only available Sunflower cable channel until people get whatever box they need to get all the channels. This must really be hell for some of the posters on this site, although I suppose that there may be some real-time internet sources available for them to view.

FWIW, all of my news channels are working now, although CNN and the Weather Channel weren't earlier. More importantly, Clinton is setting herself up to look really silly when Obama gets enough superdelegates tonight or tomorrow. MSNBC says (as of twelve seconds ago) that he needs 34 more delegates. He'll need 15-18 after SD and MT, and as of yesterday, there were 34 superdelegates waiting to publicly commit. Since she's denying the report that she'll concede tonight, she'll wait until tomorrow as one last smack at the Obama campaign. Best case scenario, she does some low-profile work for Obama just prior to the convention, works hard in the Senate during the general, and lets Bill off of his leash to work for Obama after August.

“Raider (Anonymous) says:If she concedes, then McCain just got my vote. I can't vote for Obama. He's too inexperienced, and quite frankly I think he would be an awful POTUS. I was so hoping that Hillary would make a comeback and with the nomination.”From Rolling Stone Magazine article, titled “The Queen of Pork”:http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/story/20306341/the_queen_of_pork”But Hillary's most brazen earmark this presidential-election season had nothing to do with defense. It had to do, oddly enough, with rock music. Back in June 2007, Hillary attempted to write a $1 million earmark for a museum commemorating the Woodstock festival in Bethel, New York. Not that anyone should have anything against Woodstock, but it seems weird to ask taxpayers to pay for it - especially when the project is principally funded by one of America's richest men, a media mogul named Alan Gerry.Listed as number 297 on the annual Forbes list of wealthy Americans, Gerry reportedly has a net worth of $1.6 billion. Beyond the fact that he hardly needs the money, there is this to consider: On June 30th of last year, exactly three days after the earmark was officially inserted into an appropriations bill, Gerry and his wife both made maximum donations to Hillary's presidential campaign, totaling $9,200.”One million for barely a ten grand return? Then you'll love this one:”Nor is Hillary shy about funneling earmarks to big donors who don't even need the money. Real estate developer Robert Congel, another Hillary earmark recipient who has graced the Forbes list, scored $10 million in pork courtesy of Hillary for use in developing, of all things, a megamall. Why the hell we need to pay taxes to help billionaires build luxury shopping malls is a troubling enough question, without even considering the $26,700 that Congel and his wife have contributed to Hillary over the years. That's all it costs to get $10 million out of a U.S. senator? Where are the pitchforks?”Here's my favorite excerpt:”As is often the case with defense earmarks, some of Hillary's pork spending is taken out of the Army's Operation and Maintenance budget, which is supposed to be used for troop-support initiatives like body armor. In simple terms, Hillary's rampant marauding of the defense budget takes money away from troops in the field. Soldiers wind up short on equipment, and Clinton winds up with hefty campaign contributions and free flights on private jets. Carrying charges, my boy, carrying charges!”

Drumtaculor (Bradley Klamm) says…
And McCain is any better? I think not:”McCain, meanwhile, has run a finger-wagging, holier-than-thou campaign. He insists he doesn't request any earmarks, even though he has: In 2003, he doled out $14.3 million to Luke Air Force Base in Arizona. He also insists that he is “the only one the special interests don't give any money to,” even though he has lapped the field when it comes to surrounding himself with lobbyists. Public Citizen, the nonprofit watchdog group, has identified sixty-six current or former lobbyists who are either major fundraisers or bundlers for McCain, a number that far exceeds either Clinton or Obama.Like Hillary, McCain has not been shy about doing favors for his lobbyist friends while milking their companies for campaign contributions. As chair of the Senate Commerce Committee, McCain obliged several firms, including Paxson Communications and Glencairn, by proposing an amendment that would have enabled them to own multiple TV stations in the same market. Though the measure was never adopted, Paxson rewarded McCain with a flight on its private jet, and a Glencairn executive made donations to McCain's campaign a month after he held the hearing.”Since the sheeple are too busy sucking at the teat of media hype to take any of the third-party candidates seriously… Obama is the lesser of 3 evils.–Yet, unless we start publicly financed campaigns, you're going to see a good deal of this:”barack obama (d) Top Contributors Goldman Sachs $544,481 University of California $371,266 Ubs Ag $363,257 JPMorgan Chase & Co $353,808 Citigroup Inc $331,946 National Amusements Inc $313,511 Lehman Brothers $312,597 Google Inc $293,974 Harvard University $292,441 Sidley Austin LLP $287,795 Skadden, Arps et al $266,413 Morgan Stanley $253,576 Jones Day $245,875 Time Warner $245,828 Exelon Corp $229,861 Wilmerhale Llp $215,231 University of Chicago $208,007 Latham & Watkins $199,966 Microsoft Corp $196,093 Kirkland & Ellis $190,976”How many pounds, nay TONS, of rice could we have fed starving children with that amount of money? Instead it goes to screen-printed bumper stickers and corrugated yard signs. Millions spent on air-fare and TV commercials. And HE's the one trying to make a difference, right?

Written by William J. Bennett today:”And thus the Democratic party is about to nominate a far left candidate in the tradition of George McGovern, albeit without McGovern's military and political record. The Democratic party is about to nominate a far-left candidate in the tradition of Michael Dukakis, albeit without Dukakis's executive experience as governor. The Democratic party is about to nominate a far left candidate in the tradition of John Kerry, albeit without Kerry's record of years of service in the Senate. The Democratic party is about to nominate an unvetted candidate in the tradition of Jimmy Carter, albeit without Jimmy Carter's religious integrity as he spoke about it in 1976. Questions about all these attributes (from foreign policy expertise to executive experience to senatorial experience to judgment about foreign leaders to the instructors he has had in his cultural values) surround Barack Obama. What little has been revealed by the media shows he has some majory character flaws, is extremely naive regarding foriegn policy.Oh, but he said he was going to bring change; therefore I should believe his words, even though he has almost no experience, and has proven he will consistently bend the truth when it suits him (which camp did your great uncle liberate?), and do the politically expediate thing (just left his church of 20 years), in order to get elected. Barack Hussein Obama could get up there and use “hope” and “change” in his debates and speeches in my example below and this new breed of huffington/dailykos/moveon far-left Hillary and Bush hating kooks will still trip over one another to cast their vote for Barack Hussein Obama. Here is my example of what will get the afore mentioned kooks to vote for him:”I've been talking about change; about hope. What I want to tell you tonight is I hope I can change some things but can not promise. If there is a change, I hope it is good change. I can only try to change things with a feeling of hope that they will work.” This will have the loons worked up into an orgy of fantastical idealism–-swooning and screaming “More, more, more…… O-B-A-M-A!!” ….over and over and over. And of course, as I've so correctly stated, the left wing media, the other wing of the Democratic Party who does their bidding and sets their policies and agendas, will be campaigning like never before to insure he is elected.

So here is the real deal. On election day, votes will be cast some for the democrats some for the republicans. At the end of the day, they will count all the votes and the side that has the most gets to call the shots for a few years. Now if things go your way, you will be on the right side of the fence, if they dont go your way, you will have something to complain about for a few years.Either way its a win win deal for everyone involved. Our tax dollars will support all political figures no matter if they are senators or presidents. And they will get pay increases every year. This brings me to my final point of having no point at all other than to say if you win you win and if you loose you still have something to complain about. 10-4 over and out

It's certainly better than a man applying to be Commander In Chief confusing the two dominant warring factions during a present war- particularly one he claims to know how to win. Cowards. No, I'm not claiming that all anti-Obama people feel this way. I'm guessing it's close to 50%, but that's just my opinion and completely unofficial statistic.

That is ok, you can have another Liberal Blogger of the Day Awards to make you feel better.Do you not realize that the media has been pulling for Obama ever since Iowa? If not, you are really late to the game.

“Still, I remain taken aback that the AP is pushing things, the way they are, especially if the polls are still open.”If you always remember that the corporate media will ALWAYS do all that it can to maximize its advertising dollars, then it become quite easy to see what is going on. The media wants a close contest. According to the most accurate and up to date polling information I have seen (http://electoral-vote.com/) Hillary is far superior to Obama in the match up with McCain. Thus, the spectacle we have witnessed all year with the corporate media pumping up Obama, tearing down McCain and leaving the sad & lowly McCain alone until his opponent is picked. In this manner the mostly right wing controlled media have engineered the selection of the weaker of the two Democratic choices.

scott…”In this manner the mostly right wing controlled media have engineered the selection of the weaker of the two Democratic choices”That is the funniest thing I have heard all day. Yeah, it isn't that the liberal media is in love with Obama and believes electing an African American would end the hundreds of years of bitter relations, it is really the right wing media. ROTFL.If the conservatives really had a choice they would clearly choose Hillary since she is hated by so many people.

scott…Your site lists expected total vote (liberals, conservatives, and moderates). You were referring to what conservatives wanted, and so was I. Your site does not disprove my statement about what conservatives would want. All your sites proves (assuming it is correct) is how people currently feel, not how they will end up voting in November. The conservatives have a lot more ammo to attack Hillary with than Obama, since Obama is new the only stuff conservatives have is what they have recently learned and his far left voting record in the senate.

I'm afraid Obama supporters and the Democratic Party are a bit too optimistic about the election. Hope and change are wonderful ideas. How about some information first, please. I'm looking forward to the next five months and the debates. It will be interesting. Obama probably has it handled, with his handlers preparing a “Foreign Relations Book for Dummies” book as we speak. He may be OK. I tend to doubt it though. I think McCain will utterly run circles around him to the point of embarassment. Then, the media will try to soften the blow for the public, saying that Obama still came out on top with straight-forward non-answers.

It's too bad that all Democrats can do is hope Bush and republicans is what get them elected, not actual ideas and a promise to the people. I don't see anything change-wise, just one party desperately clinging to the hope of a win. McCain is going to come out with great ideas, he has worked across party lines. He will take this extreme situation and use it to his advantage. The internet won't be able to change minds in the end.

I was reacting to the originally quoted statement about being shocked that the AP was pushing Obama so hard & I remain of the opinion that the corporately owned media in this country have engineered the selection of the weaker of the two Democratic choices. Does not matter to me. I am voting a straight non-republican party ballot for the rest of my life in response to the lying criminals that have been in power for the last 20 years. Much like the New Deal Democrat who voted for FDR's party until the day they died, I intend to impose a very long and sustained electoral response to george w. bush & friends.

Logic, what makes you think that Senator Obama does not “see the Presidency as a means to his own ends?” Does not his entire political career reveal an extremely ambitious man with numerous Machiavellian tendencies? Regardless of the Clintons' own warts, doesn't the fact that he has been able to beat the two most politically ruthless people on this planet tell you something about him? Are you familiar with the lawsuits he filed at the beginning of his political career in Chicago in order to eliminate his primary opponents, who were long-standing, respected Chicago Democrats, on technical grounds? We will be hearing much more about this in the next few months, and if certain key people in Chicago were bitter enough to pull a Scott McClellan, it could get very interesting.Godot, you're dead-on right about the smile. Gotta can it, and can it now.

I apologize if someone already said these things, got home late and I'm too tired to read through the whole thread.I don't see what Obama has to gain by picking Hillary as a VP candidate (which was what all the radio talk shows were discussing all the way home). I don't think those Dems who said they wouldn't vote for Obama, for whichever reason(s), are going to change their minds just because Hillary would be VP. I don't know about you folks, but the only consideration I make as to a VP candidate is if it's someone I want to be president in 8 years. And I think everyone including Hillary knows that while she may have a shot in 2012, 2016 will be too late for her. And remember - Hillary still has an extremely high negative rating, which I can only see hurting Obama.I can also only see one possible reason why Hillary would take the VP slot if it were to be offered. It is after all pretty much a nothing job; Hillary would try to make it sound like more (as she did with her first lady 'experience'), but she has the potential for getting more power, real power, in the Senate. The only reason I can see her taking the spot on the ticket would if she thought it would *hurt* Obama's chances, so she'd have a better chance of running again in 2012.And I think Obama's smart enough to know both of these things.

I'm glad he won.I cannot abide that woman.Aside from the fact that she ran her campaign eleven million dollars into debt to herself (how responsible would she be with my tax dollars?), is being sued for nonpayment by vendors who put on fundraising functions for her (way to support small business!), counts herself as 'winning' the popular vote (but only if you don't count the caucus states), refused to release her tax returns when asked repeatedly (where DID that eleven million come from?), and has still never answered all the questions about her involvement in Whitewater, there's the fact that when told in 1994 that her proposed healthcare plan would bankrupt thousands of small and independently-owned businesses that couldn't afford to provide the mandated insurance to their employees, she responded with the flippant dismissal that she 'wasn't responsible for every undercapitalized business in this country.'Yeah, it's past time to put a woman in the White House. But for the love of a thousand gods, not that one.

bondmen (and anyone else foolish enough to buy into bondmen's claptrap):The so-called “Whitey” tape has been the pinnacle of Internet rumor and speculation for more than 72 hours. Certain “people” (using that term loosely) have been generating a lot of empty bandwidth about this.Larry Johnson has been challenged, repeatedly, by perhaps hundreds of people: “You claim there's a tape? Then show it to us!”No tape has been produced yet-and I think there's a very good chance that no tape exists. Just like John Kerry's “intern problem” in 2004 didn't exist, but was cooked up by Murdoch, Ailes and Drudge:http://nymag.com/nymetro/news/politics/national/features/9221/Here's a clip of Faux News lapdog Roger Stone trying to make references to the tape on Geraldo Rivera's show (that name right there, by itself, is a good measure of “credibility”): I've transcribed the first paragraph of Stone's hard-hitting, clear, concise, succinct, unconditional, no-dbout-about-it answer:**********************************************************”Well, uh, there's a buzz: uuhh, which I believe now to be credible, that, some indelible public record exists of public remarks that Michelle Obama allegedly made, uh, which are, uh, outrageous at-at worst, but-a-a-at best, but: uuhh: could be termed 'racist' including some, uh: uuhhh, reference to white people as “whiteys,” allegedly. Uuuhh, and there's been a race here, Geraldo, you know-“http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frACCoVvOi8**********************************************************Uh-huh. No doubt about it.I'll stick my neck out and call “red herring” on this one.And once more: I challenge Larry Johnson, or anyone else, to serve up such a tape: if it exists.Your move, bondmen.Agnostickagnostick@excite.comhttp://www.uscentrist.orghttp://www.americanplan.org
