Drum and bugle corps to practice at LHS

A drum and bugle corps led by a drum major who is a Free State High School graduate will rehearse today in Lawrence.

The public will have an opportunity to view the Colts, who compete on the Drum Corps International circuit, practice about 7 p.m. at the practice field northwest of 21st and Louisiana streets at Lawrence High School.

Keenan Cox, a 2006 Free State graduate, is the drum major for the corps, based in Dubuque, Iowa. Other members involved from Lawrence include Mallory Cox and Chris Hansen. Carol Lowman, a Kansas University student from Topeka, is also a member.

The 135-member corps includes musicians from across the country and world. The Colts will come to Lawrence after playing in Broken Arrow, Okla., and they are preparing for the championship in August.

Lawrence resident Darrell Cox, father of Keenan and Mallory Cox, said the students work hard throughout the summer, and the past couple of years they’ve had big crowds watch them at Lawrence stops.

“These kids are doing something really, really positive, so it’s really fun to watch them,” he said.
