Fort Riley commander headed for Pentagon

Fort Riley’s commanding general has been nominated for a post at the Pentagon and his third star.

Maj. Gen. Robert E. Durbin was nominated Friday by Secretary of Defense Robert Gates to be special assistant to the Army chief of staff for enterprise management.

Durbin has been at Fort Riley for a little more than a year, replacing Lt. Gen. Carter Ham. Durbin is also commander of the 1st Infantry Division. No announcement was immediately made regarding Durbin’s replacement at Fort Riley.

“We wish Maj. Gen. Durbin and Mrs. Durbin all the best. We are going to miss them at Fort Riley,” said Maj. Nathan Bond, a spokesman for the post.

Ham was nominated Friday for his fourth star and to be the next commanding general of the U.S. Army Europe and 7th Army, based in Germany.
