Vote set on science incubator funds

Bottom line

City commissioners will consider formally approving a request for $75,000 a year for the next 10 years to fund a new life sciences incubator building that would be constructed on Kansas University’s West Campus.

Background

Commissioners during a study session last month gave unofficial approval to the request by the Lawrence-Douglas County Biosciences Authority and Kansas University. The city and the county both have been asked to provide funding for the estimated $8 million facility. The facility, which would be run by the Lawrence Regional Technology Center, would serve as a place for start-up companies using KU research to grow their businesses. The building would be across the street from KU’s Multidisciplinary Research Building on West Campus.

Other business

Executive session (5:30 p.m.)

Consider motion to recess into executive session for 45 minutes for the purpose of discussion of matters relating to employer-employee negotiations. The justification for the executive session is to keep negotiation matters confidential at this time. The commission will conclude the executive session at approximately 6:15 p.m. and resume the open meeting at 6:35 p.m.
