Offices, services closed for Fourth of July

Government offices and public services in Lawrence will be closed Friday in observance of Independence Day.

They also will be closed in most area towns.

All city, county and state offices will be closed, as will federal offices in the General Services Administration and the federal courts. Douglas County Municipal Court will be closed.

Banks will be closed. Lawrence Transit System buses will not run.

There will be no commercial waste pickup. Residential routes are unaffected.

The Lawrence Public Library will be closed.

The Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department offices and clinic will be closed. The Lawrence Workforce Center also will close.

The post office won’t make deliveries Friday. Express Mail deliveries will be made. Mail pickup from collection boxes won’t be made as posted on individual boxes. UPS and FedEx will not deliver or make pickups.

LINK, the Lawrence Interdenominational Nutrition Kitchen, 221 W. 10th St., will serve meals from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Doors open at 11:30 a.m.

Douglas County Senior Services will be closed. Dining centers will be closed and there will be no home-delivered meals.

Parking meters in downtown Lawrence will be free.

All recreation facilities will be closed, including Holcom Park Recreation Center, Community Building, East Lawrence Recreation Center and Prairie Park Nature Center. Regular operating hours resume Saturday. There will be no recreational classes, camps, special events, special population classes, adult sports, youth sports or aquatic classes on July Fourth.

Eagle Bend Golf Course and Learning Center, 1250 E. 902 Road, will be open and is accepting tee times.

The Outdoor Aquatic Center will be open from 1 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. The Indoor Aquatic Center will be open from 5:15 a.m. to 6:45 p.m. South Park Wading Pool will be closed.

Kansas University will be closed. Libraries are closed on July 4 but reopen on July 5. Haskell Indian Nations University and its cultural center will be closed.

Liquor stores will be open.

The customer service department of the Journal-World will be open for calls and walk-ins from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m.

No holiday edition of USA Today will be printed.
