Eudora ? The Veritas Christian basketball squads knew they had a tough opponent coming to town, but neither could hold back Lebo as the Wolves swept the Eagles on Tuesday.

Veritas girls coach Kevin Shelton liked what he saw in the first half of his game, but the second half was another story as Lebo ran away to a 60-35 win.

“We came out in the second half and just lost our mental focus,” Shelton said. “There was no one in that locker room happy with how we played that second half.”

The game changed in a flash for the Eagles (11-5), who were only down six after three quarters. Lebo opened the fourth with a 7-2 run to take its first double-digit lead of the game, and Shelton called a time out in hopes of straightening out his club. However, the Wolves went on an 8-3 run after that to put the game out of reach.

“They were a little deeper than us, and I think we wore down just a little bit,” Shelton said of the fourth-quarter lapse when the Eagles were outscored 25-6 and went 1-for-7 with 10 turnovers.

Senior Kristie Tiegreen led Veritas with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Marteka Carlton had two buckets, four rebounds and three assists. Freshman center Meaghan Holmes impacted the game defensively with six blocks and seven rebounds against Lebo, which had 10 different players score.

The Eagles boys had it even tougher. Playing without junior center Taylor Zook (6-foot-4), Veritas faced a Wolves starting lineup with four players taller than anyone the Eagles suited up.

Lebo used its size and pressure to jump out early and finished just as well with a 67-39 win.

The Eagles struggled to solve the Wolves’ traps in the first quarter, and trailed early 17-2. The worst part for coach Doug Bennett was he knew it was coming.

“You can’t simulate that in practice,” Bennett said. “We don’t have a JV team made up of 6-4 guys.”

But the Eagles did find some composure in the second quarter after turning it over eight times and scoring only five points in the first.

Veritas won the second quarter, 17-13.

Both Veritas teams travel to Olathe Christian on Friday.
