Bean recall widens to include older cans

The canned bean recall that led to Dillons recalling its Tri-Bean salad on Tuesday has been expanded to include five years’ worth of beans packaged by the New Era Canning Co., according to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

KDHE advises consumers and restaurants to review the list of brand names available at www.fda.gov/oc/opacom/hottopics/newera.html to determine if they may have a product subject to the recall. The cans are primarily of the larger than 6-pound variety and may be known under more than a dozen different brand names, including those distributed by U.S. FoodService and Sysco.

People who find they may have some of the beans are urged to dispose of the cans immediately and without opening the cans. Consumers should dispose of them by placing them within a plastic bag and then throwing them in a trash can.

Restaurants should dispose of them in a locked container.
