Kansas Democratic Party leaders are expecting a good turnout at the Feb. 5 caucuses “to mirror the excitement” at earlier nominating contests such as in Iowa and New Hampshire.

“These Democratic candidates have inspired and excited a lot of voters, and I think that will be reflected in our turnout on Super Tuesday,” said Jenny Davidson, a state Democratic Party spokeswoman, during an online chat Tuesday afternoon with LJWorld.com readers.

Sen. Hillary Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama are slugging it out for the party’s nomination. With more than 20 states having either primaries or caucuses on Feb. 5, known as Super Tuesday, the candidates will be after every delegate possible, Davidson said.

Former Sen. John Edwards and New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, who already qualified even though he has ended his candidacy, will also be available choices in Kansas.

Davidson also said she expected the state party to hear in coming days from campaigns about potential candidate visits to Kansas.

Kansas Democrats will caucus on Feb. 5 in sites determined by voters’ state Senate and congressional districts. Voters need to be in line by 7 p.m. to ensure they can participate, Davidson said.

Kansas voters who want to participate in the Democratic caucuses can change their registration to the party at the door that evening, if needed.

Kansas Republicans will caucus Feb. 9.
