Vintage play has new life

February sweeps and Black History month enter their final week with a project befitting both. “A Raisin in the Sun” (7 p.m., ABC), a 1959 stage play revived on Broadway to much acclaim in 2004, makes its debut as a TV movie.

Sean Combs starred in the play and returns here as Walter Lee Jr., a frustrated man of 35 who sees his chances for advancement slipping away. His wife, Ruth (Audra McDonald), endures his moods and endless dreams and schemes with a stoicism bordering on defeat.

Walter pins his hopes on an insurance windfall awaiting his mother, Lena (Phylicia Rashad), and hopes to strike it rich by opening a liquor store with the help of some friends. Lena has no immediate plans for her riches, except for the sum set aside for her daughter Beneatha’s (Sanaa Lathan) college education. The drama’s title, and its story of dreams denied and deferred, is taken from a poem by Langston Hughes.

To call this adaptation of a play from a half-century ago stagy and dated is obvious and unnecessary but also undeniably true. The drama depends on a kind of exalted dialogue that lends itself better to live performance.

“Raisin” also engages in broad stereotypes about the affluent that undercut its power. But these are small quibbles about a fine production of a classic featuring memorable performances for any medium, be it the stage or the screen, large or small.
