The Bread for the World Lawrence Coalition will give those interested in ending global hunger and poverty an outlet at a workshop March 1.

The workshop will be from 9 a.m. to noon at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1245 N.H.

Kansas University Chancellor Robert Hemenway and Elise Young, the mid-Atlantic organizer for Bread for the World, will speak at the workshop, sponsored by the coalition, which includes First Presbyterian Church, Plymouth Congregational Church, Trinity Lutheran Church, St. John the Evangelist Church, Ecumenical Christian Ministries and Lutheran Campus Ministry.

“Part of the workshop is going to be about the Millennium Development Goals and then also just talking about Bread for the World’s work, which is to advocate for reducing and eventually eliminating hunger in the world,” says Gary Teske, pastor at Trinity Lutheran. “Their kind of stance is that they believe hunger should not exist, that all people should live in dignity and that calls us to action.”

The Millennium Development Goals, created by the United Nations in 2000, pledges that by 2015, U.N. nations will:

¢ Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger.

¢ Achieve universal primary education.

¢ Promote gender equality and empower women.

¢ Reduce child mortality.

¢ Improve maternal health.

¢ Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases.

¢ Ensure environmental sustainability.

¢ Develop a global partnership for development.
