KU softball heads to Vegas tournament

Off to its best start in five years, Kansas University’s softball team will be in Las Vegas this weekend for the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic.

The Jayhawks, who won five of six games at a tournament last weekend in Orlando, will open in Vegas against Oregon at 2 p.m. and Portland State at 5 p.m. KU will tangle with BYU on Saturday, then battle Seton Hall and host UNLV on Sunday.

Junior third baseman Val Chapple is off to a hot start, leading the Jayhawks in nine offensive categories, including a .400 batting average. Sophomore Sarah Vertelka leads KU pitchers with a 3-0 record and an 0.00 earned-run average.
