New Year’s holiday to close offices again

Government offices and public services in Lawrence will be closed Thursday in observance of New Year’s Day.

All area city, county and state offices will be closed Thursday, as will federal offices in the General Services Administration and the federal courts.

Douglas County District Court will be closed Thursday and Friday, but anyone who has been summoned to appear for a limited-action civil court case needs to appear at 8:30 a.m. Friday.

Banks will be closed Thursday.

Lawrence Transit System buses will not run Thursday.

City of Lawrence residential and commercial refuse and trash collection scheduled for Thursday will run on Friday instead.

Parking meters in downtown Lawrence will be free Thursday.

The South Park Recreation Center will be closed Thursday. Recreation centers at Holcom Park, East Lawrence and the Community Building will also be closed. The New Year’s Overnighter for children will run from 8 p.m. Wednesday until 8 a.m. Thursday at the Holcom Park Recreation Center. To register, call 832-7940.

The Prairie Park Nature Center and the Indoor Aquatic Center will be closed Thursday. Eagle Bend Golf Course will be open normal hours, weather permitting.

The Lawrence Public Library will be closed Wednesday and Thursday.

Douglas County Senior Services will be closed Wednesday through Sunday. Meals will not be served and buses will not run.

The U.S. Postal Service won’t make deliveries Thursday, and post offices will be closed. UPS and FedEx will not make regular deliveries Thursday.

The customer service department of the Journal-World will be open for calls and walk-ins from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. Thursday. It will be open regular hours Friday.
