Journal-World All-Area First Team

Boys

Roy Wedge, Jr.,

Lawrence High

Wedge was the cream of the crop for the LHS boys in 2008. He finished as the top Lion at just about every meet this year and made a serious bid at an individual state title as he finished second at the Class 6A meet, just one second out of first place. Wedge also won this year’s Sunflower League meet.

Ben Wilson, Sr.,

Lawrence High

It wasn’t as much Wilson’s times and finishes that earned him a spot on this team as it was his commitment to the sport and his dedication to Lawrence High. He finished 10th at state, was among the top group at regionals, was sixth at the Sunflower League meet.

Logan Sloan, Sr.,

Free State High

Sloan was one of two FSHS boys to qualify for the state meet as individuals. In addition to finishing near the top of the regional meet, the Firebirds’ top runner placed fourth at the Sunflower League meet and finished the season with a 15th-place showing at state.

Kain Anderson, Fr.,

Free State High

Anderson was one of two FSHS boys to qualify as individuals for the Class 6A meet and he followed that up with a 30th-place showing at state. Although the finish put him on the outside of the medal picture looking in, it was the third best finish among all freshmen who competed at the state meet.

Tony Weiss, Soph.,

Baldwin High

In addition to finishing second at state, Weiss was first at Anderson County, the Baldwin Invite, Sabetha, the Frontier League meet and regionals. He also placed third at Kansas University’s Rim Rock meet.

Connor Wright, Sr.,

Baldwin High

Wright provided the BHS boys with experience and stability during the 2008 season. In addition to helping lead the BHS boys to third place at state, Wright placed fourth at the Frontier league meet, fifth at regionals, and seventh at state.

Trey Lind, Sr.,

De Soto High

The De Soto leader was on the brink of greatness all year and he delivered his best performances when it counted most — eighth at the Frontier League meet, 15th at regionals and 19th at the Class 4A state meet, good enough for an individual medal.

Girls

Kyra Kilwein, Sr.,

Free State High

Kilwein was the Firebirds’ No. 1 runner all season. She capped a sterling career with a second-place finish at the Sunflower League meet, a regional championship and a fifth-place showing at state.

Morgan Flannigan, Jr.,

Free State High

Flannigan was one of five Firebirds to finish in the top 29 at the Sunflower League meet and was the second-highest Free State placer at the state meet with a 16th-place finish.

Corinna Papps, Sr.,

Baldwin High

In helping the Baldwin High girls win their second straight Class 4A state title, Papps took third at state. She also finished fourth at Anderson County, sixth at the Baldwin Invite, fifth at Sabetha, fourth at league, and second at regionals.

Calleigh Durr, Sr.,

Baldwin High

Durr placed 10th at state and in the Top 5 four times during the season. The highlight of her year came when she won the Sabetha Invitational. She also took second at the CommunityAmerica Invite, fifth at league and fifth at regionals.

Connor Twombly, Jr., Baldwin High

Twombly saved her best for last, as she finished fourth at state. In between the two, the BHS junior placed seventh at Anderson County, seventh at the CommunityAmerica Invite, sixth at league and sixth at regionals.

Ellie Sheridan, Soph.,

De Soto High

In addition to winning the Frontier League title, Sheridan also won a regional title and finished first overall during meets at Anderson County and Bonner Springs. The only blip on her radar screen was an off-day and a 26th-place showing at state.

Lacey Erickson, Soph.,

De Soto High

Erickson teamed with Sheridan to form a formidable one-two punch for the Wildcats this season. She capped her season with a solid stretch that included third at the Frontier League meet, third at regionals and sixth at state.
