LHS, FSHS wrestling not at full strength

? The Lawrence High wrestling team did not take its full squad to the Eudora Tournament of Champions on Friday at Eudora because of a myriad injuries and illnesses on the team.

But LHS coach Pat Naughton was relatively pleased with his team’s 16th-place standing at the end of the first day of the two-day tournament.

“We’re doing pretty good for only having seven guys,” Naughton said.

Senior Blake Greenfield was the No. 1 seed in the 145-pound weight class and went 4-0 on Friday. Sophomore teammate Levi Flohrschutz also went 4-0 on the night, wrestling in the 135-pound weight class.

Like Lawrence High, Free State also wasn’t at full strength health-wise. The Firebirds were empty in four weight classes and finished the first day near the bottom of the 24-team field.

FSHS senior Julian Kuszmaul notched two wins in the 189-pound weight class, and Ammon Austin claimed three wins in the heavyweight division.

In area action at the event, Eudora High’s Caleb Clayton-Molby won three matches in the 189-pound class. Lansing finished the day in first place, Baldwin in seventh and Eudora in 10th overall.

The tournament will resume at 9 a.m. today at Eudora High School.
