Kansas City, Mo. ? The Kansas City Chiefs may pack up and head for St. Joseph, Mo., when they open training camp in 2010.

Citing Missouri Development Finance Board documents, the St. Joseph News-Press reported Friday that the Chiefs have committed in writing to moving their training camp from River Falls, Wis., to Missouri Western State University pending approval of a $25 million state tax credit proposal.

The newspaper said the board is scheduled to meet Tuesday in Jefferson City to consider awarding its tax credits “to leverage a $50 million contribution from the Chiefs” for improvements to Arrowhead Stadium and other ballpark common areas.

If approved, the deal would have the Chiefs donate $10 million from the sale of the tax credits to Missouri Western for a new indoor practice facility. The facility would be scheduled for completion in time for the Chiefs to pitch camp in 2010, and for the next 10 years.

The proposal is a joint venture from the Chiefs and the Jackson County Sports Complex Authority, which owns Arrowhead.

After the late Lamar Hunt moved the team from Dallas in the early 1960s, the Chiefs established their training camp at William Jewell College in Liberty, north of Kansas City.

But they’ve been happy using the University of Wisconsin-River Falls as their summer home the past 19 years. The state of Wisconsin has spent millions upgrading its facilities, including putting in a new locker room and weight rooms.
