Topeka man arrested in Friday night’s armed robbery case

Police arrested a 23-year-old Topeka man in relation to an armed robbery reported in the 1300 block of Tennessee Street late Friday night.

Damien D. Bullock was booked into the Douglas County Jail early Saturday morning on suspicion of aggravated burglary.

Lawrence Police Sgt. Susan Hadl said that about 11 p.m. Friday, a 23-year-old KU student was exiting her vehicle in the alley on the west side of Tennessee Street. She said a 6-foot, 240-pound black male accosted her with a handgun. He was reportedly wearing a ski mask and dark-colored clothes.

Hadl said that the victim, who wasn’t injured during the incident, gave up her purse to the suspect. The suspect took off running between houses in the area.

A nearby witness reported seeing a man who matched the suspect’s description driving away with another man. They were in a dark-colored Buick with a Shawnee County license plate.

About 2 a.m., Lawrence officers were en route to Topeka to investigate possible evidence regarding the robbery. About 5:30 a.m., Lawrence and Topeka officers were investigating the occupants of a vehicle that matched the description of the getaway car. Hadl said officers were trying to determine whether the occupants were involved with the robbery.

Hadl said Lawrence police had been working closely with Topeka officers, exchanging information about the case. “Topeka really helped us out,” she said. “We feel very fortunate to have made contact with those folks tonight.”
