Police investigating shots fired outside 23rd Street Brewery

Lawrence police combed the parking lot outside 23rd Street Brewery, 3512 Clinton Parkway, early Friday morning, after someone fired a gun as patrons were leaving the bar.

Lawrence Police Sgt. Susan Hadl said there were no reports of injuries in the shooting, which occurred during a fight in the parking lot after the bar closed at 2 a.m.

“Witnesses reported hearing two to four gunshots,” said police spokeswoman Kim Murphree.

Matt Llewellyn, an owner of 23rd Street Brewery, said the restaurant had been host to a private party for Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity.

Llewellyn said the party was for Stop Day, a traditional day off at Kansas University before the start of finals, which begin Monday. “We’re very, very thankful, obviously, that nobody got hurt,” the owner said. “That’s the biggest thing.”

A doorman, who identified himself as Tiny, said most patrons were out of the bar when the incident happened and that the night was incident-free until the gunfire.

“There was a little bit of a fight in the parking lot,” he said. “One of the guys didn’t like how it ended, and took out a pistol and shot a few shots in the air.”

The number of people at the party was unclear. Llewellyn said the bar was at capacity and estimated more than 200 people were there. A bouncer estimated 350 to 400.

Llewellyn said the crowd was very respectful and there was very little drinking going on inside the bar. Llewellyn said the business hired private security to monitor the party and added he was “blown away” when he heard the shooting had happened.

“It’s our biggest nightmare … to have this kind of thing happen,” Llewellyn said.

Hadl said police were not sure what type of weapon was used. “Officers canvassed the area but found no empty rounds or evidence of the gunshots,” Murphree said.

Police were looking for evidence in the parking lot and reviewing security tapes from the Hy-Vee supermarket across the parking lot from the bar. Hadl said witnesses saw a silver vehicle involved in the shooting, but she did not know to what extent it was involved.

Attempts to reach members of the fraternity were unsuccessful Friday.
