5:03 p.m. Another injury accident was reported on E2300 Road in the far southeast region of the county.

Lawrence Police have also reported numerous cars in ditches, but so far none of the accidents in the city seem to have resulted in serious accidents.

Roads in Kansas City, including I-70 near I-635, have been much worse and blocked more extensively.

3:25 p.m. The slick conditions and blowing snow have caused problems for drivers Tuesday on the Kansas Turnpike.

Several wrecks have been reported near Lawrence exits.

A 56-year-old Prairie Village man also died Tuesday morning near El Dorado when he lost control of a pickup truck that rolled over, according to the Kansas Turnpike Authority.

The first significant batch of winter weather this season across the state has kept the Kansas Highway Patrol busy, especially on the turnpike.

The snow is not deep, and it’s mostly blowing across highways, which apparently has made some drivers believe they can still drive fast, a KHP supervisor said.

“I think that’s what’s causing a majority of our problems,” said Capt. John Walters, who is part of the KHP’s operations on the turnpike.

Troopers are encouraging people to slow down and use caution, especially if they commute home this evening on the turnpike.

3 p.m. Emergency responders are investigating another accident on eastbound I-70 just west of an already reported accident.

It is unknown whether the accidents are related or whether it may be from a car that was unable to stop in time to avoid other cars delayed by the earlier accident.

2:55 p.m. At least some eastbound traffic on I-70 heading into Douglas County is blocked as emergency crews try to clear the scene of the injury accident near Lecompton.

2:20 p.m. Lawrence police spokeswoman Kim Murphree said that as of 1:30 p.m., officers have responded to 14 noninjury and one injury accident in the city today.

2:13 p.m. Crews from Lecompton Township Fire and Lawrence Douglas County Fire and medical are investigating an injury accident on eastbound I-70, two miles west of the Lecompton interchange.

One vehicle was reported to be involved.

2:01 p.m. Emergency workers are responding to a one-vehicle wreck on the edge of Baldwin City.

Just before 2 p.m., dispatchers received a call about a vehicle that had struck a tree near the 1600 block of U.S. Highway 56, which is the northwestern edge of Baldwin City.

1:50 p.m. Emergency responders have cleared the scene of an injury accident on the Kansas Turnpike.

Traffic is moving again though the Kansas Department of Transportation reports that the roadway is partly snowpacked with ice.

1:21 p.m. The Kansas Highway Patrol and Lawrence Douglas County Fire and Medical are investigating a two-vehicle injury accident on the Kansas Turnpike this afternoon.

The accident was reported shortly before 1:20 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of I-70. At least one lane of eastbound traffic was blocked approaching the Kansas River bridge.

12:15 p.m. Snow and sleet continues to fall in Lawrence.

The city put out a release recently and indicated that city crews are treating icy roads, though plowing typically doesn’t begin until there is about three inches of accumulation on roads. City crews began their work at 4 this morning.

The city also reminds residents that a city ordinance requires all sidewalks to be shoveled within 24 hours of the end of a snow storm.

11:15 a.m. According to a statement released this morning by the Kansas Department of Transportation, road conditions are beginning to deteriorate.

Roads in Douglas County and areas of east of Lawrence are categorized as wet/slush. As drivers move west across the state, roads are categorized as snowpacked/ice.

Snow accumulations of 1-3 inches are expected in the area throughout the day.

The warm temperatures of late will be distant memory by this afternoon, when overnight rain is expected to turn to snow, with as much as three inches accumulating.

Craig Gold, meteorologist for KTKA, a sister station of 6News, says temperatures will stay in the low 30s. He cautioned drivers about blowing snow and slush on roads, which could be hazardous.

Gold said to expect heavier rain and snow between 9 and 10 this morning.
