Talib selected to anniversary team

Former Kansas cornerback Aqib Talib was named to the Orange Bowl Committee’s 75th Anniversary Team on Friday.

Talib was named the 2008 FedEx Orange Bowl Most Valuable Player after leading Kansas to a 24-21 victory against Virginia Tech. Talib returned an interception 60 yards for a touchdown for the game’s first score. He also had five tackles and returned a punt 17 yards.

De Soto football coach resigns

De Soto High School activities director Steve Hawkins announced Friday the resignation of Brad Scott as the school’s head football coach.

Scott said he was resigning his coaching duties after nine years for family reasons.

Ex-KU golfer tied for 11th

Former Kansas University golfer Gary Woodland of Topeka shot a third-round 71 and is tied for 11th in the final stage of the PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament on Friday.

Woodland had five birdies, two bogeys and a double-bogey on the PGA West TC Stadium Course, the same course on which he shot a 70 on the first round of the six-round event. He had a 64 Thursday onthe Nicklaus Tournament Course.

Woodland and seven other golfers are tied for 11th at 11-under par in the 163-golfer field. The top 25 finishers, plus ties, earn their tour cards for 2009.

Kansas swimming leads Kenyon Invite

The Kansas University swimming and diving team was in first place with 750.5 points after the second day at the Kenyon Invitational.

KU placed first in every event and was led by Maria Mayrovich, who earned four first-place finishes Friday night. Kansas will look to wrap up first place in the final day today.

Smyth on watch list

Kansas University senior relief pitcher Paul Smyth was named to the Brooks Wallace Award Watch List by the College Baseball Foundation. The Wallace Award is presented to the nation’s top collegiate baseball player.
