Kansas University safety Darrell Stuckey has been named to the 2008 all-Big 12 football first team and receiver Dezmon Briscoe and linebacker James Holt earned second-team honors, the conference announced Tuesday.

Stuckey, who was an all-Big 12 honorable mention selection last season as a sophomore, intercepted a team-high five passes this season (third in the conference) and was second on the team in tackles with 94. Against Missouri last week, Stuckey had a hand in three Tigers turnovers, intercepting two passes from Missouri quarterback Chase Daniel and both forcing and recovering a fumble.

Briscoe, meanwhile, proved to be the Jayhawks’ most dangerous receiving weapon in 2008, catching 78 passes for a team-high 1,206 yards and 12 touchdowns. The sophomore out of Dallas finished the regular season in the top 10 nationally in total receiving yards and receiving yards per game (100.5), and was second in the conference in each of those categories.

Holt, a senior out of Altus, Okla., finished the season with a team-high 97 total tackles, 15.5 tackles for loss and was tied for the team-lead with seven sacks. His six forced fumbles also ranked second in the nation.

Seven Jayhawks players earned honorable mention honors, including defensive linemen Caleb Blakesley and Jake Laptad, offensive linemen Ryan Cantrell and Adrian Mayes, receiver Kerry Meier, linebacker Mike Rivera and running back Jake Sharp.

Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford, a leading candidate for this year’s Heisman Trophy, was named the conference’s offensive player of the year, while Texas defensive lineman Brian Orakpo was named defensive player of the year and Oklahoma State’s Dez Bryant earned special teams player of the year honors. Oklahoma’s Bob Stoops and Texas Tech’s Mike Leach were named co-coaches of the year.

The teams were selected by the league’s coaches.
