Three Kansas University graduates are among the top 100 most powerful women in the world, according to Forbes magazine.

Sheila Bair, chairwoman of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, is ranked No. 2. Bair received a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from KU in 1975 and her law degree in 1978.

Cynthia Carroll, chief executive of Anglo American, one of the world’s largest mining companies, ranks No. 5. Carroll received a master’s in geology at KU in 1982.

Linda Zarda Cook, executive director of gas and power for Royal Dutch Shell, ranks No. 43. Cook earned a bachelor’s degree in petroleum engineering from KU in 1980.

The magazine annually produces the rankings, which take into account the woman’s job title and past career accomplishments, as well as the amount of money she controls. German Chancellor Angela Merkel is ranked the most powerful woman in the world for a third consecutive year.
