Sunflowers blooming in local fields

Local farmer's field shines with yellow flowers

Sangeet Mehta, Kansas City, Mo., frames a photo of a sunflower northeast of Lawrence on Sunday. The state's official flower is in full bloom at Ted Grinter's farm near Stillwell Road and 246th Street in Leavenworth County. Mehta, an IT specialist originally from New Delhi, India, photographed the towering stalks around sunset.

Ted Grinter grows sunflowers. Lots of them.

His 40-acre lot lies between Lawrence and Tonganoxie on Highway 24-40. The plot fits 22,000 seeds per acre, meaning Grinter boasts over 1 million sunflowers.

The best time to see them will be this weekend, he said. After that, he says,” They won’t be looking too good.”

He doesn’t make much money off growing the flowers, but there are donation boxes in case a visitor wants to take a souvenir flower with them.

After the prime season is over, Grinter takes the sunflowers down and turns it into bird seed.
