Fire damages unoccupied home

Fire caused extensive damage to an unoccupied residence at 1321 E. 18th St. Sunday night, but no injuries were reported, according to Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical.

The fire was reported at 8:15 p.m. Sunday by neighbors, Fire Chief Mark Bradford said from the scene. The three-bedroom home was unoccupied at the time of the fire, Bradford said. He said there was heat and smoke damage to the home and the bulk of the damage was in the center of the home. He did not have an estimate of the cost of the damage and said the cause of the fire is under investigation.

McKenzie Edmonds, a 12-year-old girl who lives in the neighborhood, said she spotted the fire early. McKenzie said she saw smoke coming from both ends of the house and also saw flames through a bedroom window.

Neighbors reported that the home’s occupants had recently moved out.
