Impostors posing as employees of a Kansas insurance agency are seeking Social Security numbers from policyholders in a new scam reported to the Kansas Insurance Department.

A southern Kansas insurance agency recently reported that consumers had received calls in the middle of the night from a scam artist using the agency name. People were told that their accounts needed to be renewed and were asked for Social Security numbers.

“The scam points out the need for Kansans to be wary and diligent in reporting any fraudulent insurance activity,” Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger, of Lawrence, said.

Praeger’s office offered these tips to avoid becoming a scam victim:

¢ Before signing paperwork, writing a check or giving out personal information, call the state insurance department – (800) 432-2484 – to confirm the company or agent offering insurance is legitimate and state-licensed.

¢ There are a few cases when someone in the insurance industry has deceived customers for personal gain. If you do not receive an insurance identity card or a copy of your premium in a timely manner, contact your insurance company.
