La. Street home to be demolished

A dilapidated house at 1232 La. likely will be demolished within the next two weeks.

City commissioners on a split vote approved a demolition of the house after several months of discussion with Lawrence attorney Price Banks, who is representing the owner of the property.

Commissioners ultimately agreed that the house was a safety hazard in its current condition and could not feasibly be rehabilitated.

Neighbors had protested the demolition because the owners of the property have not submitted any plans for what they want to build on the property.

Commissioners also said they were concerned about the lack of a replacement plan. But as part of the demolition permit, commissioners added a provision that no building permit could be issued for the property until a new Oread Neighborhood Plan has been adopted by the City Commission. The commission also added language that the vacant lot can’t be used as a parking lot.

Commissioners Boog Highberger and Rob Chestnut voted against the demolition permit.
