Jayhawk Boulevard has opened in time for the start of Kansas University’s upcoming fall semester.

The road, which is a major thoroughfare through campus, was closed the majority of the summer for repairs and upgrades on KU’s utility tunnels.

The university also announced Wednesday that the first phase of deferred maintenance on Wescoe Hall is done. Workers repaired heaved floor slaps, mechanical systems and various electrical services on the first floor of Wescoe. Classrooms and offices were also re-established for the classics department.

Occupants will move into their new offices this Friday, according to a press release from KU.

The recently completed work is part of a $4.9 million project to fix failing mechanical systems in Wescoe. The second phase – taking place on the third floor – is currently under way and is expected to be finished in December. The third phase will begin January.

The east wing of Wescoe’s third floor will be closed during the fall semester, except for walking traffic to the elevators. The parking lot south of Wescoe will be used as the contractor’s staging and storage area until the project is finished. Construction will occur between 4 p.m. and 2:30 a.m.
