Twins 4, Yankees 0

Minneapolis – Brand-new papa Glen Perkins pitched eight outstanding innings, and light-hitting Adam Everett hit a two-run homer, lifting the Twins to a victory over the reeling Yankees.

Perkins (9-3) allowed four hits and three walks while striking out four.

He induced two inning-ending double plays and got a standing ovation when he left after the eighth.

The Twins took a half-game lead in the AL Central over the White Sox, who lost 5-1 to the Red Sox.

Joe Nathan fanned Bobby Abreu, Alex Rodriguez and Xavier Nady in the ninth to complete the first shutout of the Yankees at the Metrodome since June 24, 1996.

The Yankees fell nine games behind Tampa Bay in the American League East, five games behind Boston in the wild-card race.

And they are starting to get asked about possibly missing the playoffs for the first time since 1993.

Indians 13, Orioles 8

Cleveland – Asdrubal Cabrera homered, then doubled in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning, and Cleveland earned its fourth straight victory.

The Indians took an early 5-0 lead, but fell behind, 8-7. Cleveland scored three times in the seventh, and Ben Francisco and Andy Gonzalez homered in the eighth.

Nick Markakis had three hits and drove in four runs for Baltimore, which took an 8-7 lead in a five-run seventh.

Edward Mujica (1-1) got one out for his first major-league win.

Blue Jays 7, Tigers 2

Detroit – Justin Verlander struggled yet again, and Toronto roughed him up to snap a three-game losing streak.

Rod Barajas had a homer and three RBIs for the Blue Jays.

Red Sox 5, White Sox 1

Chicago – Josh Beckett pitched eight strong innings, and Boston beat Chicago even though John Danks took a no-hitter into the seventh.

Kevin Youkilis’ broken-bat single ended the no-hit bid, and J.D. Drew’s two-run double put Boston ahead 2-1. Jed Lowrie added a two-run double in the ninth as the Red Sox gained a four-game split and moved within four games of first-place Tampa Bay in the AL East.

While Danks retired his first 17 batters, the White Sox did little against Beckett (11-8). They fell out of first place in the AL Central, a half-game behind Minnesota.

Beckett yielded seven hits, struck out eight and did not walk a batter for his second consecutive win.

Danks (9-5) did not allow a base-runner until he hit Jacoby Ellsbury with a pitch in the sixth. He took his first loss since May 24 despite allowing just two hits and two walks while tying a career high with nine strikeouts in seven innings.
