Search continues for missing canoeist

Bad weather on Wednesday cut short the search for the body of a De Soto man in the Kansas River.

“It’s frustrating,” said Aaron Henrichs, a Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks officer. “We pushed it as long as we could and ended up running up river with hail and lightning cracking off.”

The search has been ongoing since a canoe carrying Shaun Shaw, 26, and friends capsized Saturday near Eudora.

The search will resume at 8 a.m. today, Henrichs said.

“We’re going to evaluate how much the river has come up,” he said. “Our sonar operator has agreed to stay another day. He’s seen some things he’s interested in, we just can’t seem to get the current or the weather to cooperate to get the dive team in to check.”

The Douglas County underwater search team has been standing by to assist.
