Girl struck by bullet making progress

Katherine Cook, the 5-year-old girl who was struck by a bullet in the head while playing outside her rural Linwood home, continues to make progress at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Mo.

According to katherineupdate.com, a Web site where Katherine’s mother, JoAnne Cook, posts updates about Katherine, the child has been working with physical therapists and has started eating. She previously was being fed exclusively through tubes.

Katherine has been at Children’s Mercy since Feb. 23. In the days after the shooting, the Leavenworth County Sheriff’s Office canvassed the area.

This week, Sheriff Dave Zoellner said the investigation remained open. He said he continues to believe “that this was not intentional, or a malicious act.”

Kansas Bureau of Investigation and Kansas City, Mo., police labs have assisted the Leavenworth County department in trying to determine the caliber of bullet. But Zoellner said without the actual bullet, which remains lodged in Katherine’s skull, it’s difficult to move forward with that part of the investigation.

“We have to be sure, and without that piece of evidence, there’s always going to be a question,” Zoellner said.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Leavenworth County Sheriff’s office, (913) 758-4082.
