The Lawrence High School Class of 1973 will have its 35th high school reunion the weekend of Sept. 19-20.

Friday’s events: We will participate in the LHS homecoming parade. Meet at 1 p.m. at South Park. The parade will start at 2:30 p.m. The parade route will be from South Park to Lawrence High School. Be sure to wear red and black. At 6 p.m., we will meet in the northeast parking lot at Haskell’s Indian Nations University for a tailgate party. There will be a sign. At 7:30 p.m., we will attend the LHS homecoming football game. We will sit on the northside of the stadium. Tickets are $4 or $5.

Saturday’s events: A dinner and dance will be given at 6 p.m. at HHR Bar and Grill, 4931 W. Sixth St. in Lawrence. Theme will be Hollywood Nights. Dress business casual or formal. Price is $40 for singles and $70 for couples. Money needs to be received no later than Sept. 1, 2008. Hope to see you there. Colten Coffin, McLouth, has been awarded the 2008 Fujiwara Scholarship from Ottawa University. The award provides for the Fujiwara Cross-Cultural Homestay Program in Japan during the summer of 2008. During the Homestay Program, Coffin will receive room and board for a two-week stay in Japan. He also has been awarded approximately $500 from the Jerry Campbell Cross-Cultural Fund, a fund established in memory of alumnus Jerry Campbell by his mother in 1971.

Bethel College in North Newton announces recipients of academic scholarships for the 2008-09 school year:

Amanda Fredrickson, Lawrence, has been awarded the Outstanding Student Academic Scholarship, valued at $22,400 over a four-year period. Fredrickson is a graduate of Lawrence High School. Her parents are Kevin and Lisa Fredrickson.

Kelly Karasek, Lawrence, has been awarded the Bethel Scholar Academic Scholarship, valued at $17,600 over a four-year period. Karasek is a senior at Free State High School. Her parents are Stephanie and Tom Karasek.

Peter Zemansky, Lawrence, has been awarded the President’s Academic Scholarship, valued at $32,000 over a four-year period. Zemansky is a senior at Lawrence High School. His parents are Ellen Kroeker and Gil Zemansky.

Connor Hartpence, Eudora, has been awarded the Harter Scholarship at Baker University. He is the son of Doug Hartpence and Vicki Johnson.

As a Harter Scholar, he will receive full tuition for four years at Baker and will have the opportunity to spend a semester of study abroad at Harlaxton College in England. It’s the university’s most prestigious academic scholarship.

Sigma Alpha Lambda announces Kristin Vernon, Lawrence, has become a recent member of the national leadership and honors organization at Kansas University.

Emily McAfoos, Basehor, has been awarded the 2008-09 Jerry Campbell Class of 1971 Memorial Cross-Cultural Scholarship from Ottawa University. McAfoos will use her $1,500 stipend to participate in a class trip to Ireland. The scholarship was established in memory of Jerry Campbell by his mother, Margaret Campbell.

Susie Jones-LeRoux and Phillip LeRoux, Manhattan, announce the birth of their son, Jeremy Thomas LeRoux, born Feb. 7, 2008, in Manhattan.

Jeremy has a sister, Jessica LeRoux, 2 1/2.

Alexandra Skarka, Free State High School senior, was awarded honorable recognition in this year’s “Being an American” essay contest sponsored by the non-profit Bill of Rights Institute, Arlington, Va. Skarka and her teacher, Julie Miller, each received a $250 prize.

Other honorable mention recognition was awarded to Colin O’Neill of De Soto High School and his teacher. Both received a $250 prize.

University of Nebraska-Lincoln announces students to be honored for academic achievement. The celebration will begin at 2 p.m. on April 6 at UNL’s Lied Center for Performing Arts.

Area students include Ryan Bodensteiner, Lawrence; Nicholas Burkart, Lawrence; Allison Hunt, Shawnee; and Blake Lawrence, Shawnee, received High Scholars. High Scholars are in the top 10 percent of their class or have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.6 or higher. Bodensteiner had a 4.0 grade-point average for the semester.
