Kansas University senior basketball guard Rodrick Stewart had successful surgery Wednesday to repair a fractured right kneecap.

Stewart, who sustained the injury trying a dunk at last Friday’s Final Four shootaround at the Alamodome in San Antonio, is expected to be able to be back in the gym working out in six to eight weeks and be ready to play basketball again in 12 weeks.

“He is doing fine,” Stewart’s dad, Bull, reported Wednesday night. “The doctor called and said it went well. The surgery was perfect. No meniscus, no ACL tears, no tendon damage. He said Rodrick is a strong, healthy young man, and I was glad to hear that.”

Bull Stewart said Dr. Jeff Randall of KU’s medical team performed the surgery in Lawrence.

“A pin will be taken out after six weeks,” Stewart said. “It’ll take six to eight weeks to heal. I’m so happy for Rodrick. He’s so happy Kansas rallied around him. He’s a great kid. I’m so proud to be his dad.”

Rodrick Stewart hopes to play professionally somewhere next year.
