Kansas University junior basketball guard Brandon Rush has a Missouri court date related to a family court and child support case when the season ends.

According to Jackson County, Mo., court records, Rush has a hearing scheduled for May 13 in Kansas City, Mo. The case was filed March 11 along with a motion for civil contempt. According to the Missouri Bar Association, a judge can enforce a child support order through a civil contempt order.

A court spokeswoman said Friday the file was in a judge's possession and specific information was unavailable. Much of the information in the online court records were not listed as public information.

Rush also has a Lawrence Municipal Court appearance scheduled for April 11 after he was arrested in December on two warrants for failure to appear in court in Lawrence. Rush had been cited last October for speeding and in December 2006 for driving on the left side of the road and not having proof of insurance.

Dead beat daddy! Dead beat daddy!

Wow! What timing for this story to be released. I'm sure it is just a coincidence that it is making news now.

  3. jonas (anonymous) says…

Something tells me in a few months his child should get something of a windfall, and will probably be pretty well off as a result.

Future NBA star in training ....

  5. muffaletta (anonymous) says…

Sign the kid to KU now.

  6. igby (anonymous) says…

Sounds like a typical hip-hop artist; child support warrants, driving while suspended. It's a culture thing that needs to change if your going to be a role model.

  7. ralphralph (anonymous) says…

So, that's where his jump shot went ...Bad move to mess with the guy's head going onto the big stage of March Madness .... a little patience and a big NBA paycheck goes into the support calculation. Should have just laid back and relaxed until after the tourney ... unless that reminds them too much of how this all happened ...

Should have just laid back and relaxed until after the tourney : unless that reminds them too much of how this all happened : So are you saying this should have waited until AFTER the game? If he wasnt a BB player folks would be like string him up. He helped make this baby and that child should come first When will these boys get that figured out. One thing i have to say about MO is they do enforce the orders unlike here.

  9. punkrockmom (Nikki May) says…

Yeah, but if he wasn't a basketball player this wouldn't be news. I do think if it's his kid he should be responsible, I personally don't know what he does in his free time.

  10. hockmano (anonymous) says…

How is his personal business any of our business? Lawrence is so full of gossip it's pitiful! Give up gossiping and alot of people wouldn't have anything to do!

  11. srj (anonymous) says…

Gossip? Court records are not gossip. And I am not sure if he leaves that he would be a NBA player next season. Coming off injury, he is not the same yet as last year, when he was not going to be a first round pick that year anyway.

  12. nobody1793 (anonymous) says…

    Bench him.

  13. Eride (anonymous) says…

Why is this being reported again.... and why now?The LJWorld printed an article about this back when it happened. Why would they print another one the day before the Final Four game?Idiots.

punkrockmom (Anonymous) says:Yeah, but if he wasn't a basketball player this wouldn't be news. The LJWorld printed an article about this back when it happened. Why would they print another one the day before the Final Four game?Because its the ljw... they only print what is moronic at best...

There are other dead beat dads in town, and they are not news worthy, if they were, then maybe their child (children) would be taken care of. And before you all have something smart to say, I think child support should be the first thing that is paid out of a paycheck, if you owe it. I raised 2 children without recieveing child support, and beleive it or not, my kids turned out just fine. I dont recall being in the public eye. Why not just post all of their pictures on the front page of the LJW and then everytime we see them out in public, we will recognize them. This is at the very least uninteresting news to most of us. The LJW should not have to dig so low to come up with better stories.

  16. punkrockmom (Nikki May) says…

You know, you don't have to be a deadbeat dad to go to court for child support. Sometimes the custodial parent will go to court to change the agreement or even the one paying can go get it reviewed. Seriously, people go to court all the time for this.

  17. somebodynew (anonymous) says…

kufanattic - I couldn't agree more that child support should be the first thing taken out of a paycheck. In this case though, the NCAA does not ALLOW people like Rush to earn a paycheck. People need to keep in mind, that pundrockmom is correct - you don't have to be a deadbeat to have a court hearing. A lot of this paperwork stuff is just to ensure the claim is still legally enforceable at a later time (i.e. when he gets his first PAYING contract). And I agree with all other that this is just BS for LJW to print this story now. It is not anything "new", just re-hashing of stuff that has been out there. I definately call BS on it.

  18. jonny_quest (anonymous) says…

Perhaps, his pattern of irresponsible, bad conduct is a deliberate plan to emulate professional basketball players thus making for a seamless transition into the NBA.

  19. jonas (anonymous) says…

I think punkrockmom could have hit the nail on the head. I can't imagine any of you would say it's impossible that with his college career likely giving way to a professional one, someone could think that it's about time to talk about changing the terms of the deal.

  20. mommaeffortx2 (anonymous) says…

Yes the timing is suspect, TarHeel fan maybe, and really none of this is our business. If you want to print about dead beat dads then start by going after the ones that have not paid in years and owe more than what most houses cost in this town. LJW should be ashamed of printing this now.

  21. ralphralph (anonymous) says…

Hey, if he was trying to become a lawyer, you don't sue him the week of the bar exam .... it's just reality ... you want him to succeed so the kid will benefit too. If BR lights up the final 4, the payday will be huge and the kid will reap the rewards. If he shoots like the last game, the kid might be at the soup kitchen for another year. The timing of this shows spite and stupidity, not concern for the child or common sense about finances. As for the traffic stuff ... uh, if I was tagged for life by the way I drove when I was 19, it wouldn't be pretty. Give the guy a break on that end ... he'll grow up. Good luck to BR tonight and (I hope) Monday night.

  22. jumpin_catfish (anonymous) says…

Bad on him and so what it's being reported now, he stands to make a big payday very soon because he can played basketball off KU's scholarship not because he's a great student. Grow up man.

  23. 1wetwilly (anonymous) says…

...fathering illegitmate kids, failure to pay child support, civil contempt, arrest warrants, traffic violations, no insurance, etc., are all examples of normalcy for most college and professional basketball players. It's accepted, expected and even embraced as part of their culture. If character mattered then college and professional basketball would not exist today.

  24. ralphralph (anonymous) says…

If you can hit the "J", it's all good.

  25. trinity (anonymous) says…

for god's sweet sake people, unless you are privvy to what is contained in the court file-maybe you ought to reserve the "dead beat dad" and negative comments?! this could possibly be coming to court at this time for a variety of reasons. and does not the "babymama" have some sort of culpability here as well? or no, maybe she should just kick back&draw child support, watch oprah all day, get her nails done, etc...three sides to every story; his side, her side, and the truth.

  26. Inquiring_Mind (anonymous) says…

I wonder if Jeremy Case will step up and pay child support when his child is born this summer. Or will he end up in court as well?

  27. jonas (anonymous) says…

trinity (Anonymous) says:"for god's sweet sake people, unless you are privvy to what is contained in the court file-maybe you ought to reserve the "dead beat dad" and negative comments?!"Geez, Trinity, where have you been posting for the last few years? this is basically what we do here.

  28. trinity (anonymous) says…

lol, i've been here jonas! maybe i'm just so crazy with 'Hawk fever i finally blew my cork. or whatever. ;)

  29. autie (anonymous) says…

Makes me wonder if LJW doesn't have some Missouri grad on staff...snuck in and got this in the paper this morning. Knowing that every Mizzou person has Final Four envy today.
