Free State wins; LHS tumbles

? Caleb Gress pitched a complete-game two-hitter, lifting Free State High’s baseball team to a 3-1 victory over Olathe Northwest on Tuesday.

Gress struck out eight and walked two, going the distance and helping the Firebirds improve to 5-0.

“He did a good job of keeping them off balance with both curve and slider,” FSHS coach Mike Hill said, “and he spotted the fastball.”

Offensively, Free State scored all three runs in the fifth inning. Adam Rock socked a two-run triple, and Hunter Scheib had a two-out RBI single.

The Firebirds will play at Leavenworth on Thursday.

SM Northwest 5, LHS 4

Shawnee – Lawrence High’s baseball team committed five errors – including three in a four-run seventh inning that doomed the Lions to a 5-4 loss Tuesday to Shawnee Mission Northwest.

“We were absolutely aggressive the first six innings. It was great,” LHS coach Brad Stoll said. “We were aggressive in all facets. We were not aggressive in the seventh. Northwest was putting it out there for us to finish it, and we couldn’t get it done. We just really did not take the initiative.”

Lawrence will travel Thursday to Olathe North.
