The Class of 1947 at Liberty Memorial High School will celebrate 60 years since graduation with a reunion beginning at 6 p.m. Friday at the Union Pacific Depot, 402 N. Second St.

Members of the school’s other classes from that era are invited to attend from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

The class will gather for dinner at 6 p.m. Oct. 6 at Lawrence Country Club, 400 Country Club Terrace.

Bud Jennings and Jackie Kennedy are leading the event.

¢Irene McPherson, Oska-loosa, will celebrate her 85th birthday with a reception from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 6 at First Presbyterian Church in Oskaloosa. Friends and family are invited.

¢Several Lawrence scholastic chess players earned medals at the Kansas State Grade-Level Championships on Sept. 22 at Washburn Rural High School in Topeka. Players competed individually against others in their grade level.

Lawrence participants included:

¢ 10th grade: Peter Lesslie, Free State High School, second; Roy Wedge, Lawrence High School, sixth; Kellen Cross, FSHS, seventh; Nate McFadden, LHS, eighth.

¢ Seventh grade: Andrei Elliott, second; and Cal Young, fourth, both of Southwest Junior High.

¢ Sixth grade: Eddie Wilson, Cordley, sixth; Owen McFadden, Wakarusa Valley, seventh; Aaron Simon, Quail Run, eighth.

¢ Fifth grade: Sam Stephens, Quail Run, fifth; Robert Newman, Wakarusa Valley, sixth; George Wedge, Cordley, ninth.

¢ Fourth grade: Roscoe Bradt, Cordley, third.

¢ Second grade: Ting-Ting Shi, Quail Run, first.

¢Elizabeth “Libby” Johnson, Lawrence, has been elected to the Student Senate for 2007-08 at Kansas University. Johnson joins about 80 previously elected student leaders representing each of KU’s schools and campus living groups and various organizations. The election was Sept. 4-5.

Johnson, a student in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, graduated from Lawrence High School.

¢Several area students at Emporia State University will receive Outstanding Student Technology Awards on Oct. 5.

Winners include Adam Christian, Baldwin City; Anthony McGhee, Overbrook; and Timothy Trowbridge, Baldwin City. The students are being honored for their successful use of assistive technology, which is any type of device or material a student must have to use a school’s regular curriculum.
