Emmy-winning sound man dies

? Joel Fein, an Emmy-award winning sound man who worked in television and movies, died Saturday in Wichita at the age of 63.

Fein moved to Wichita about five years ago from Los Angeles with his wife, Kelly Marshall Fein, who is from Kansas.

He won an Emmy for best sound for “Dive to the Edge of Creation,” an episode of “National Geographic Specials.” He was nominated for Emmys for best sound for the TV movies “A Time for Miracles” and “Truman.”

Fein also was nominated for an Oscar for sound mixing work on 1978’s “The Buddy Holly Story.”

His filmography includes movie restorations of “The Bridge on the River Kwai” and “Spartacus,” as well as feature films such as “The Prince of Tides” and “Back to the Future 2.” He also did work for TV shows such as “MASH,” “Charlie’s Angels,” “Dawson’s Creek” and “Once and Again.”

Fein also was a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and the Motion Picture Editors Guild.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Jon White and Jeff White; a sister Marsha Waber; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and two nieces.
