From the Lawrence Daily World for Sept. 29, 1907: “Government legal actions show that some parts of Standard Oil have been making profits as great as 1,000 percent per year and it is little wonder that legal actions are resulting. For the past 10 years, the first has averaged profits of $61 million a year. : Paul Cheney, 19, of Lawrence, was killed at Ottumwa, Iowa, when he was run over by a train. He had been working the summer in the harvest fields and was on his way home, to return to the university, when the accident occurred. He had been in the engineering department. He was trying to make connections with a train he was about to miss when the fatality occurred. : The university now has 1,200 students on its books for the fall term and that figure is expected to top 1,600 by Saturday. Many engineers, medics and pharmics are continuing their educations, and there are long lines of enrollees. Up to today, there were more freshmen enrolling, but upperclassmen are now dominating. : The Douglas County Fair is a great success, and more than 2,000 attended the opening day of the horse races.”
