Wheat planting, corn harvest under way

? About 7 percent of the 2008 Kansas wheat crop is now in the ground, Kansas Agricultural Statistics said Monday.

In its weekly crop update, the agency said planting was running behind the 12 percent from last year at this time and the 13 percent average for this time of the season.

Kansas farmers also were busy with corn harvest, with 33 percent of the corn now in the bin. The condition of the crop still out in the field was rated as 14 percent excellent, 53 percent good and 24 percent fair. Only 9 percent rated as poor or very poor.

Among other crops:

¢ Soybean condition was rated as 11 percent excellent, 51 percent good, 30 percent fair, 7 percent poor and 1 percent very poor.

¢ Sorghum condition was rated as 18 percent excellent, 54 percent good, 22 percent fair, 5 percent poor and 1 percent very poor.
