In the rough

To the editor:

Relatively recently, Eagle Bend was on its way to being a well grown in, well groomed, very nice golf course. Now, it rivals only Eudora’s course in poor quality. From the unattended, ill-stocked concession stand to the inexplicably closed driving range, Eagle Bend is a joke as a golf facility. The fairways are sparsely covered with green stuff, and I’ve played grassier roughs in the Arizona desert. Only the greens bear any semblance to a real course. The city has ruined Eagle Bend. They even fired their free, volunteer marshals! On the plus side, if you want to get in a quick 18, Eagle Bend is your place. It is as empty as a transit bus.

The city commissioners have made tragic cuts to programs such as Bert Nash and the library. They have siphoned all the money from the Parks and Recreation Department. They have cut funding to the Lawrence Convention & Visitors Bureau, whose main goal is to bring people to Lawrence to spend money!

They have raised property taxes again, and they want to raise the sales tax. And yet the T rolls on. These carbon-coughing, traffic-plugging money suckers chug around town, chauffeuring people around town like ugly limousines, tax dollars pouring out the windows.

I have a solution. Wouldn’t it just be cheaper for the city to buy those few who ride the T a car? Or at least suspend or drastically curtail service until the city and her residents can afford it?

Joel Wagler,
