Baker University has lost too many students to traffic accidents in recent years, the campus minister said Thursday, the same day the university lost another student.

Molly K. Larson, a 20-year-old junior, died Thursday at Kansas University Hospital, where she had been in a coma for more than a week after sustaining critical injuries from a single-vehicle rollover accident on Sept. 2 on County Road 1055 south of Lawrence.

“We experience campus tragedy like this too often, and when it does happen, I notice that the students find ways of drawing together,” said the Rev. Ira DeSpain.

Baker’s main campus in Baldwin City has 945 students. DeSpain said there was a campus vigil on Tuesday, where several people spoke highly of Larson, including mothers of children whom Larson helped care for at a local preschool.

Larson was an international business major from Vancouver, Wash., and was in her second year at Baker after transferring to the university in 2006. She was also in the Delta Delta Delta sorority.

“In the past two weeks, her family often said Molly’s days at Baker were the happiest time of her life,” Baker President Pat Long said in a news release. “I’m proud of our students, especially Molly’s sorority – Delta Delta Delta – for the support they provided to her family.”

No one at the sorority could be reached Thursday night.

“It’s been a long, intense and meaningful last few weeks as we’ve gone through this together,” DeSpain said.

He said several students have died in recent years, including 23-year-old Jeffrey Morgan, who died in April 2006 when he was struck by a train in Edgerton.

A memorial for Larson is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday at Baldwin City’s First United Methodist Church, Eighth and Grove streets.
