Overland Park ? The Free State High boys soccer team met a team it couldn’t outscore Tuesday evening at Shawnee Mission South.

The Raiders beat the Firebirds, 2-1, a far cry from Free State’s first two games, in which the Firebirds blasted their opponents by a combined 17-0.

Coach Jason Pendleton said the Firebirds (2-1) weren’t as efficient against SM South and lost to a talented team.

“We had lots of opportunities, but we didn’t convert them,” he said. “We could’ve gotten the result we were looking for if things had broken a little bit differently.”

The Firebirds took a 1-0 lead midway through the first half when forward Alex Clayton, who was playing hurt, was assisted by sophomore Daniel Chance.

However, the Raiders scored on a penalty kick later in the half and scored again from 30 yards out in the second to take the lead for good.

The Firebirds thought they had tied the game at 2 when Greg Glatz headed the ball into the net, but he was called offside.

Free State will play Lawrence High at 7 p.m. Thursday, a game that Pendleton called “arguably the biggest regular-season game of the year.”
