Baker knocks off No. 24 Evangel

? Baker University’s football team knocked off No. 24 Evangel, 16-14, on Saturday to move to 4-3 overall and 4-2 in Heart of America Conference play.

After opening the game with a 6-0 lead behind the strength of two Derek Doerfler field goals, the Wildcats trailed 7-6 at halftime.

A 10-point third quarter, however, gave the Wildcats the upper hand, and the defense held on for the victory.

One week after being named the NAIA’s national player of the week for a five-field-goal performance which included a 62-yard game winner, Doerfler once again put on a show. He was 3-for-3 on the day on field goals, with all of them coming from 50 yards out or farther.

Baker outgained the Crusaders 141 yards to 34 on the ground.

Frank Owens and Richie Bryant did most of the damage in the running game, with Owens carrying 20 times for 106 yards and Bryant adding 56 yards on 12 carries.

Another area where BU was far better than Evangel was in penalties. The Wildcats were penalized just three times for 15 yards, while the Crusaders were flagged 12 times for 99 yards.

The victory was the second in a row for BU, which will return home Saturday to play host to Central Methodist University at 6 p.m.
