Martha Stewart to dedicate geriatric center

New York – Martha Stewart says she chose the bonsai as the symbol of a geriatric center that bears her name because of the tree’s longevity.

“With the proper care and nurturing, a bonsai tree can live for well over a hundred years,” Stewart said in a statement.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Martha Stewart Center for Living at Mount Sinai Medical Center was set to take place today.

Stewart, 66, donated $5 million for the outpatient clinic in Manhattan, which she is dedicating to her 93-year-old mother, Martha Kostyra.

Stewart said she wanted the center, which is expected to open in November, to encourage older patients to “embrace a healthier lifestyle.”

“We all want to live for many, many years but it’s important to have a good quality of life, too,” she said.

Osbournes to auction furniture, collectibles

Los Angeles – Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne are doing some housecleaning.

The 58-year-old rocker and his wife are selling art, furniture and collectibles from their homes in Malibu, Beverly Hills and England.

The Nov. 30 auction will also feature items from their MTV reality show, “The Osbournes,” including son Jack Osbourne’s black leather bedroom furniture and a cast-iron crucifix that adorned Ozzy’s den in various episodes.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Sharon Osbourne Colon Cancer Foundation.

“It’s time to unload,” said Sharon Osbourne, who celebrates her 55th birthday today. “We just have an overabundance of possessions that we do not need.”

With their three children now grown and out of the house, the couple have changed their style and moved to a new home, she told The Associated Press, adding that parting with hundreds of items has been “one of the most refreshing things I’ve done.”

Ozzy, however, doesn’t share his wife’s enthusiasm.

“I don’t know why we are selling everything as I want it all,” Osbourne said in a statement.

Tom Sizemore says he’s quit drugs for good

Bakersfield, Calif. – Tom Sizemore says he’s done with drugs.

“I’m not trading my whole life for some powder,” the 45-year-old actor told The Bakersfield Californian in a jailhouse interview published Friday.

“God’s trying to tell me he doesn’t want me using drugs because every time I use them I get caught,” Sizemore said.

Sizemore is serving time in Kern County for violating probation in a drug case. He was arrested in a Bakersfield hotel in May for methamphetamine found in his car. He will be released next month.

The actor was charged with seven drug-related counts but pleaded no contest to a charge of transporting drugs for personal use. He was sentenced last Wednesday to treatment in a drug therapy program.

Sizemore’s films include “Saving Private Ryan” and “Black Hawk Down.”

Director Ang Lee says he’s extremely shy

Hong Kong – Ang Lee has tackled English period drama, kung fu and gay cowboy romance. Just don’t expect him to make small talk at a dinner party.

The Oscar-winning director says that despite his celebrity, he’s extremely shy and struggles with social interaction.

“When I’m off the set, it’s hard for me to carry a conversation. That’s more difficult for me than making a movie,” he said Saturday on CNN’s “Talk Asia.”

“Making a movie, I have plans in my head. Somehow one way or another I manage to roll the camera and get something in the can. But off the set, at the dining table … it’s still awkward for me,” said Lee, a native of Taiwan.

He feels comfortable “momentarily” if the conversation turns to movies, the 52-year-old filmmaker said, but “that’s kind of about it.”

“It’s hard for me to feel comfortable socially,” he said. “I’m always shy, it’s just part of my character.”

Lee won an Oscar for “Brokeback Mountain.” His Chinese-language spy thriller “Lust, Caution” won the top Golden Lion prize at this year’s Venice Film Festival. His films also include “Hulk,” “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” and “Sense and Sensibility.”

Danny Bonaduce won’t be charged in fight

Los Angeles – Danny Bonaduce won’t face charges for tossing former “Survivor” contestant Jonny Fairplay over his shoulders at an awards show.

A charge evaluation document released by the district attorney’s office Friday said there was “insufficient evidence” to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Bonaduce committed battery because Fairplay “initiated contact and acted offensively.”

Fairplay, 33, said he underwent 2 1/2 hours of dental surgery after Bonaduce tossed him over his shoulders at the Fox Reality Channel’s Really Awards last Tuesday. Fairplay landed on his face.

The evaluation worksheet said Fairplay jumped on Bonaduce, “wrapped his arms and legs around the suspect and thrust his pelvis into the suspect’s body.”

Deputy District Attorney Jeffrey Boxer wrote that Bonaduce didn’t intentionally injure Fairplay and his “actions fell within the realm of self-defense.”

Summers: New album from The Police possible

Dublin, Ireland – Will the curtain close again on The Police when their reunion tour ends? Andy Summers says the fractious trio could have a new album in them.

“It’s sort of like living with the elephant in the room. I would see it as a challenge, to make an absolutely brilliant pop album at this stage of our career, and that would be something quite remarkable,” Summers, 64, said.

The Police broke up in 1984 following five albums and a relationship-wrecking world tour. Their hits include “Roxanne” and “Every Breath You Take.”

They reunited for a 30th-anniversary world tour that began in May and is scheduled to run into next year.
