The four-way stop at the Baldwin Junction is temporarily without rumble strips on U.S. Highway 59.

Road construction crews are waiting for a seal to be put on the resurfaced highway before they put the rumble strips back into place, said Kim Qualls, a spokeswoman for the Kansas Department of Transportation.

Otherwise, the seal on the road would fill in the rumble strips, and they would have to be redone anyway, Qualls said.

The resurfacing project began in September on U.S. 59 between south Lawrence and the Douglas County line, even though it is scheduled to be rebuilt into a four-lane road in 2010.

The resurfacing project is scheduled to be finished by the end of October, but as of now crews are ahead of schedule, Qualls said.

In August 2006, KDOT transformed the junction of U.S. Highways 59 and 56 – 10 miles south of Lawrence and known as the Baldwin Junction – into a four-way stop complete with rumble strips on U.S. 59 to alert drivers.
