State funding

To the editor:

While I agree the outcome of the MU-KU football game might have been different if played on our home turf, and I was disgusted that the game was moved from Lawrence and, by the way, out of Kansas, let us not spend too much time blaming Lew Perkins or Chancellor Hemenway.

When the first shot of the new “creative financing” plan was fired at season ticket holders with the seating plan, I complained to an area legislator, and his honest response was “I’m afraid we have forced them to that.” As long as the legislature ignores funding higher education to appropriate levels, the administration will be forced to seek other means of revenue such as delaying maintenance on university buildings, selling the KU Hospital and finding other ways to transfer tax. If the state of Kansas is not going to support the university, then it will be left to loyal supporters.
