Kansas City, Mo. We'll never know which team would have won the 116th rendition of the Border War had it been played in Memorial Stadium, home field of Kansas University, 36-28 loser Saturday night to Missouri at sold-out Arrowhead Stadium.
This much we do know: The more deserving team advanced to the Big 12 title game and kept its national-title hopes alive.
In terms of fairness, the neutrality of the site - the crowd was split pretty much equally between those wearing blue and those dressed in black and gold - offered the truest test of which team was more worthy of competing for a national title.
Then again, in love and Border Wars, who cares about fairness?
Oddsmakers generally say the homefield advantage is worth three points, but the student-driven energy of Memorial Stadium always seems to be worth more than that. Again, who knows?
None of KU's seven opponents in Memorial Stadium came within 30 points of the Jayhawks, but none had the sort of talent Missouri had at the offensive skill positions and on both the offensive and defensive lines.
The score was 34-28 until Reesing was dropped for a safety with 12 seconds remaining, a safety that would not have occurred had the score been 34-34. Scott Webb missed field goals of 33 and 45 yards. Two other scoring opportunities died when Reesing threw a pair of interceptions.
"Playing so many weeks in a row without having an interception, without having a turnover on offense, and then in the biggest game we need to do that the most to have those, it's hard not to say what if, what if that didn't happen?" KU quarterback Todd Reesing said. "It's tough, but I don't think it had anything to do with the crowd or who were playing. That's football. You can't go the whole season without throwing a pick or turning the ball over. I think we went about five or six games. All good things come to an end. We'll bounce back and get ready for the bowl game."
Reesing had gone six-plus games and 213 passes without throwing an interception, and KU had not had a turnover of any sort in four consecutive weeks.
With a victory Saturday night, KU would have moved from No. 2 to No. 1 in the polls and would need just one more victory in the Big 12 title game to play for the national title. If the game had been played in Memorial Stadium, would KU be 12-0?
"That's hindsight," KU coach Mark Mangino said afterward. "I don't get into hypotheticals, and I'm never one to look over my shoulder. The game was played here. That's the agreement we made. We had a chance to win the game just like Missouri did, and they won. I'm not a second-guesser. As I say all the time, I'm focused on the present and mindful of the future."
In the immediate future of the Border War, 2008, Mizzou is robbed of its home game and makes a return trip to Arrowhead. The odds of as much being at stake for that one are about 1 in 116.
The schedule was packed with so much good fortune for KU this season, starting with avoiding Oklahoma, Texas and Texas Tech and playing four nonconference home games. The good fortune of the schedule ran out when the Border War was moved to Arrowhead and KU to be the better team. On this night, it wasn't.

Logicman - with all the money made and all the headlines won… you can be sure this will become a tradition in KC. The big twelve and these two schools can't buy the sort of publicity they received this week. Carl and Lou will take al of the credit, when that should rightly go to the players. Money and egos talk…

I like how you say time, as in this great cosmic force or legend or something. It was last night, man, and we could have just as easily been beat at home. Missouri is a good team this year. We can lose to them with no disgrace (though surely a number won't see it that way).
It's a rivalry, for a reason. We can beat them next year.

Congradulations to both MU and KU for great seasons. There is not a person in this town that would have thought that KU would have gone as far as they did undefeated. Now on to a great bowl game. They don't play those in Memorial Stadium either. Let's go bowling. Good job, Hawks.

though it makes no difference now, it is hard to accept reports that arrowhead was equally full of mu and ku fans. where were all these blue shirts? in the upper deck? behind the espn on abc camermen? becasue they certainly weren't visible to those of us watching at home. my husband and i watched from lawrence, though we had tickets, because our hoiday travel schedule prevented us from being at the big game. i wish we could have seen all this ku support firsthand, because i don't buy it. it looked like a sea of black and gold at what was supposed to be a ku game, and that is a slap in the fce of a team that has worked so hard all season. add to that the slanted coverage of the commentators—if i never hear the name chase daniels again it will be too soon. ku may not have been on everyone's radar before, but they deserve the same amount of kudos and coverage, even when they are behind. i have been disappointed all season by the need to discuss the opposing team over kansas, and i am sick to death of hearing about kus missteps instead of their successes. perhaps by next season the world be a little more equitable, and we'll hear about all the good of the ku football team…and we can put the blowhards to rest.

Lew Perkins is a sellout. There were more MU fans in attendance, the parking situation sucked and I couldn't believe the firework display after the “home team” lost the game. Mizzou was the better team last night, but you have to wonder had that game been in Lawrence.

I don't necessarily agree with the premise. Our holding penalty on the third down allowed MU to score, then our holding penalty when we intercepted allowed MU to score, again. Webb's two missed field goals were huge, too. Without those penalties and if the fieldgoals were made, we might very well have been the “best team.

I agree with cherry1, we also watched on TV and didn't see the 70% KU crowd that had been promised during the week. It was maybe 50-50. The pregame local coverage was talking about all th MU fans in the lower bowl (?!!) and I noticed they brought their entire band, that apparently marched at the half. We switched away at the half, couldn't stand the analysis, and came back for the rest of the game. Our home game???? Several years ago the Marching Jayhawks stopped going to Columbia because of safety concerns following a particularly ugly trip.
The ABC announcers were awful, several times referring to the Jayhawks as the Manginos. It's cute on a tshirt in Lawrence, it is not appropriate on national television. This was about as neutral a venue as moving the game to Columbia would have been. Great job Lew. Way to really support KU.

So… have the out-of-control egos in Lawrence, KS finally come crashing to the floor? One would certainly hope so. It feels that way. You folks were so full of yourselves - it was comical! The mood around town is now at least somewhat tolerable. I still can't wait to get out of this wretched place (and I will - soon). But at least I've had the satisfaction of feeling your mass sadness. For a town that seems to pride itself on being happy all the time, this must be quite a shocker. Again, your egos are most annoying. And if feels really good that you have been humbled.
And again (and for the last time) - LOL!!!

This was a Missouri crowd in a Missouri town, with Missouri sales, and sales taxes. My team started to settle down in the second half, but I think they would have done that earlier in Memorial stadium. Every other KU athletic director resisted Carl Peterson's siren call, but we wanted money. Lew looks like a mobster. I wonder how much money he placed on MU? A home game in Missouri. Why do I keep having a problem understanding that?

Oh well, I am sure that we will have a “good Bowl” game to go to.
My husband and I watched the game on TV. I too saw a lot of MU fans…….once in awhile, the camera was on a very few KU fans or the band.
My youngest child, a student at KU, was at the game. She sent me a text and picture of where she was sitting…….”4 rows from baby Jesus” Mom!!!

Watched on TV with a huge KU fanbase in Denver. It seemed from the onset that Brent Musberger didn't have anything good to say about KU. By the end it semed he wanted Chase Daniels to have his baby. Oh well, we only lose 4 or 5 starters off the team and we still have a bowl game to get ready for. I have also become an OU fan for the next week. By the way “Luck Few.” (If anyone makes a T shirt, I demand my cut.)

“Suspect because of a soft schedule”
From the Los Angeles Times - this is great:
Kansas is just a chalk outline after Missouri gets through
No. 2 Jayhawks, suspect because of a soft schedule, lose, 36-28, to No. 3 Tigers, who bolster BCS title bid.
By Chris Dufresne, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
November 25, 2007
kansas city, Mo. — Kansas finally played somebody, the somebody was Missouri, and that ended all the “Rock Chalk” title talk.
It took until Nov. 24 to find out that No. 3 Missouri, not No. 2 Kansas, was probably the Big 12 Conference school you needed to throw your arms around.
Kansas got the ball back again with 17 seconds left, but quarterback Todd Reesing was sacked for a safety and that doomed one team's championship dreams — while lifting another's.
Simply plug in Missouri for Kansas as this year's latest out-of-nowhere hope.
Missouri (11-1) is one victory over Oklahoma in next week's Big 12 championship game from earning one of two berths in the Bowl Championship Series championship game, to be played Jan. 7 in New Orleans.
At worst, though, Missouri will rise to No. 2 today behind West Virginia and be assured of a title-game berth with a win next week.
Crazy season, huh?
The national title picture, once clear as mud, can now at least be explained in a few sentences.
Kansas entered the weekend with an 11-0 record, and had received more of the pregame hype. The Jayhawks, though, arrived at destiny's stadium gate entrance with a suspect schedule that included nonconference home games against inferior opponents. Kansas also missed Oklahoma, Texas and Texas Tech on this year's Big 12 schedule.
Missouri, led by Daniel, proved itself the superior “Border War” school.
“You saw it, America saw it,” Missouri Coach Gary Pinkel said of his quarterback's performance.
The cry “Why Not Kansas?” is now “Why Not Missouri?”
The 116th meeting of these border-state schools was the most anticipated in the history of an intense, but often overlooked, rivalry.
“It was frustrating,” Reesing said later. “What's most frustrating is that we beat ourselves.”
“They made plays they needed to,” Kansas Coach Mark Mangino said. “We made plays but not enough of them.”
LOL!!!

You guys are hilarious. No matter how KU would have lost this game, it would have been because they didnt play in Lawrence. Whatever you lost in HFA was made up by the officiating and the penalty disparity. Several calls and non-calls were critical to Mizzou's chances of scoring another TD.
You got beat by the better team. And that, my KU friends, is all.

KU lost the same way Bart Starr used to talk about how Green Bay would lose in the Lombardi era… they never lost, they simply ran out of time while they were behind. Great year and did you see how many underclassmen are on the Jayhawks during the introductions? The Hawks were for real this year and will be for real next year. Go Hawks!

You guys talk about all this exposure and money from the game being at Arrowhead. Stop being stupid.
If we played at home and won against Missouri (which I believe we would've), the amount of money behind playing for the Big 12 Title would've been just as good if not better, given us more exposure, and allowed us to continue down our undefeated road.
Great job Hawks Football. Your Athletic Director screwed you for the season. Lew, how could you?
If we had had the chance to play for the National Title, now there's some money. Taking this Arrowhead opportunity was a bad gamble and really selling Mangino and the Hawks Football Team *quite* short. I don't care what the expectation was before the season started… you don't sell out your own team, you don't quit on them. They didn't quit on you ,Lew.
Go Hawks Football. I hope you get a great Bowl game and beat the crap out of whoever you play. Looking forward to next season.

MU came to win, the little brats didn't and they got beat…That's what happens when the little brats get to big for their britches and walk around campus snubbing everyone as though they are better than everyone else.

No, because Mizzou, who gets penalized about as often as KU does on a normal day with the officials are somewhat competent, wont get penalized like that again. That cost Mizzou arguably about 14 points in the game last night.. And unlike KU, we've actually played people this year. You guys had played two teams with a winning record coming into this game. And, Mizzou has more experience, a better quarterback, and more weapons.
But hey, whatever makes you feel better about your loss to MIzzou last night.

You guys forget that when the ADs stroke this deal KU was not #2 in the Nation, and MU was not #4. Nobody could expect that this game was going to be for all the marbles. So this was a good way to make some good money for a program that needs that in order to bring good recruits. All this crying is done by people that have nothing else to complain about and like to put the blame of everything on someone important.
The case for Lawrence loosing money I believe is a little hard to sell. Every single bar, sports bar, place with a TV was packed, so I am pretty sure in the end quite a bit of money was made in town.
MU was a better team, but say that KU got beat bad is just insane. We hanged in there until the last play, and like Mangino and Reesing said, we did not make enough plays, and we beat ourselves. I am proud of what KU has done, and since I am not a native of the area I can tell you that I hope MU wins it all, this way it makes our lost even more justifiable (losing to the champ is better than just losing to MU, but that's my opinion).
We will never know if KU would have won here but then again, sports are not ran “what ifs”. MU was better last night and they deserved it. There is always next year, and next year is looking bright for KU.
So quit your crying and blaming game, be proud of the Jayhawks and quit trying to find excuses. MU was better, we made some good money (and got some good publicity), so even though we lost I think in the long run that was a great victory.

Something tells me you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about, and have never been on our campus. To at any point describe KU's attitude towards our football team's success as arrogant is totally false. We were, and hopefully will continue to be, pleasantly surprised and happy at our team's success. If having a rival, as opposed to a meek little @#$% you can just slap down, makes you think that we are getting uppity, then you have some issues with perception. Maybe it's the total implosion of other parts of MU's athletic program that's making you think in this way.

Alright, I hope we're not going to try and start claiming that we lost b/c of Arrowhead! Yes, I think it was really crappy for the Athletic Department to move our “home” game to friggin' Missouri. It was crappy that they had “Missouri” written in the end zone. It was crappy that about 60% of the tickets were given to Missouri people via the Chiefs (Jackson Co. residents, hello!). It was crappy that missouri's band played at half. But that wasn't why we lost.
We lost because the creativity that the KU offense showed all season, disappeared at Arrowhead.
We lost because our defense is slow and appears to lack basic tackling skills.
We lost because Todd Reesing got nervous for the first time this year.
We lost because our field goal kicker couldn't hit the uprights if he walked up to 'em.
We lost because our defensive line got manhandled like some little girls.
We lost because Missouri has some truly great playmakers there (Maclin, Temple, DANIEL).
The loss absolutely, positively stings. The loss pisses me off. But just as bad is the fact that Hemenway and Perkins sold us out so we could play a “home” game at Arrowhead friggin' stadium:but that wasn't why we lost.

But you wont do that, and you know it.
If the KU fans are going to make excuses about a loss being on a neutral field that STILL had a very large KU continguent in the stands instead of at home, then maybe you really dont think your team is ready for the big-time just yet.

I am curious if people in Columbia are going to complain as much as all these Lawrence crybabies. They have a much longer drive to arrowhead (those hailing from Columbia, of course).

Lildos…great post. KU has had a great year, by anyone's standards. And the final regular season game of the year(after 7 true “home” games played in Lawrence) was completely sold out, national television exposure and full of all the media hype you could ever want. If you're a national level high school or juco recruit, KU is forever on your radar screen. Don't think for a minute the idea of playing for an up and coming program that also plays a special huge rivalry game in an NFL venue as famous as Arrowhead isn't appealing to a high school kid. This program is clearly on it's way up to the big time. New, better facilities, better salaried coaches, strong base for next year and lots of growing national interest. I'll take the Arrowhead “problem” anyday……especially compared to the several decades of KU football.

But we got to keep in mind, whether anyone thought this team was going to be good this year or not, no one expected the season we've had. It's been a fun ride. Let's face it, the better team last night won. If they played again…who knows, but they won't.
This just gives us a good outlook for next year, and maybe a dose of revenge come 11/25/08?

The announcing was a bit biased as it seemed to lean towards “Missouri dominated” rather than what was more true… KU didn't capitalize on their opportunities. Two missed FGs and two interceptions deep in Missouri territory. That's 4 possessions where they could have very easily put points on the board. Missouri's defense really didn't shut KU down after the first possession or two. The game was closer than everyone is making it seem.
Either way what a great year for the team and here's to kicking some butt in the bowl game.

If you guys are going to whine about losing on a neutral field, then you might as well use that excuse for when you lose a bowl game.”
It wasn't supposed to be a “neutral” field. This was supposed to be a home game.
I agree with Fatty though. It wasn't the location (even though that has pissed me off since they first announced it), it was the play of our team. We couldn't tackle, we gave up big plays on 3rd and long (multiple times), and we were the more nervous team in the beginning. Could a home atmosphere have helped?, maybe.
Even still, with as bad as we played, we were one onside kick away from winning. We make those two field goals in the first half, it's a tie game towards the end of the game. As bad as we played, we still had a chance to win. That's all I ask. The loss stings, especially when it comes against the “bad guys”, but we still had a great year. Too bad too much weight will put on this loss when it comes to our ranking and bowl game.
Good luck to MU against OU. If any of the teams from the Big 12 are going to get in the Championship game, MU will have to beat OU. Unfortunately, I still think OU will beat them, which is bad for the conference.

Mr. Perkins and Mr. Alden,
You have some work to do before next year. That game should not have been played at Arrowhead. But, not because KU lost! Instead, because the Arrowhead facilities and staff were not ready for this game. Maybe my expectations for the game were unfounded, but let me say I was disappointed on all fronts. I have been to Chiefs games and this experience was nothing like that. It was obvious that the Arrowhead officials cut corners at every angle to increase their profit margin on this game.

Shame on the Arrowhead officials.
Shame on them for not requesting any officers to direct traffic at the intersections surrounding the parking lot. We arrived a 2:30 and waited 2 1/2hrs to get into the lot.
Shame on them for trying skimp on the portable restrooms and for providing few to no trash cans around the porta-johns and in the rest of the tailgate area. Members of our group had to wait for up to 45 minutes in the lines for the outside toilets. There was trash everywhere and overflowing from what few trash cans that were available.

Shame on the Arrowhead management who obviously provides no safety or crowd management training to its ushers. The real complaint is how we were treated once we were in the stadium. Hopefully, others will complain on the dangerous situation that arose in the main concourse resulting from the traffic jam of people bottlenecked into Arrowheads poorly designed facilities. The only entrance to ramps to go up the levels to our seats was so dangerously overcrowded with people. After about 10 minutes of waiting, the crowd began to compress. If anyone has ever been in the situation it can be a little unnerving. Fortunately, for me I was large enough hold my own, but there were numerous women, parents with children, and older fans who were not faring so well. After about 15-20 minutes the scene was chaotic, I had made my way to the side next to a handicap walkway for the lower level. But, the ushers refused to let anyone use this route to relieve pressure. This was initially fine I understand they also have rules and protocol to follow. But when it was obvious that this was really becoming a dangerous situation I and several KU and MU fans around me began helping parents with crying children and grandmothers over onto the ramp. At one point an usher, actually tried to tackle one fan who was helping kids up from the compacted crowd. Security and police were noticeably absent and the instead of 'ushering' people the ushers actually compounded an already potentially dangerous situation. I only saw one injury (gentlemen who was pushed down and hurt his ankle) and I pray that was the only one.

It looked like Missouri did a good job of preparing for the game. They used their talented quarterback to skillfully pick apart the Kansas defense in between the coverage zones in the secondary of the Kansas defense. The Kansas team did not make enough adjustments during half time to put a stop to this opening in the secondary coverage, allowing Missouri to continue to score in the second half for the win. (Actually it looked more like Missouri 'survived' because the clock ran out on KU's come back attempt late in the 4th quarter after they figured out how to crack the Missouri defense in the second half).
The Kansas offense did come alive when they figured out that throwing long is Missouri's weakness and KU showed that they could readily beat Missouri's defense with this strategy. The first half KU repeatedly tried to throw short and run through Missouri's defensive line without much success, and then KU started to put on the points rapidly by putting the ball in the air down field late in the game. Momentum went heavily toward KU late in the 4th quarter after successful long passes, but unfortunately too late in the game to recover.
Hopefully KU will learn what worked for them in this game and what didn't, so it doesn't happen in future games. I believe that the Kansas football team had the best team, but didn't show it until the 4th quarter when they discovered the weakness in the Missouri defense.

Last night was one of the best football games I've ever seen live. Both teams fought hard the entire game and treated the fans to outstanding football. As a result, I'm not sure why our fans are coming on here and saying the Jayhawks got exposed last night. They didn't. Kansas proved it belonged by fighting hard the whole game and having a chance to win the game on its final possession, albeit a slim one. For that, KU earned my respect.
So congratulations, Jayhawk fans, you have an excellent team and a lot to be proud of this season. I wish you good luck in your bowl game and sincerely hope you represent our division and conference in January as well as you have all season.

I was there last night and I thought that the Arrowhead staff was unprepared for the game. The portable toilets were a joke. It was a very dangerous situation when everyone started crowding into the stadium at 6:30. There were fans of each school who were pressed together into a mass where, if a fight had broken out it could have been really dangerous. The situation on the concourse was equally as bad.
I was in favor of the game being played at Arrowhead. But if they aren't going to invest in enough security and toilets…I say to move the game back to the campus after next year.

“Yes, you should have shown a bit more restraint.”
Heehee. Please, since you are criticizing us, illumine us to what you feel should have been the appropriate level of restraint. Should we, for instance, post disclaimers at the end of every praise we give, perchance? “Sweet! We won 11 games in a row! (games may not represent strength of teams and odds of winning please see conference schedule to determine proper difficulty of achievements made to this point ranking may be based off slightly inflated expectations)” I don't know, it sounds somewhat exhausting.
Maybe the problem is that you're hanging out with the wrong people. I suppose sitting in the back of Jefferson's or It's Brothers while Frat Hour is in session might give you a skewed perception on the undercurrents of this town in relation to our football team. I recommend you try a different venue. Of course, you're something of an unpleasant person, so I understand if you feel that your options in this matter are limited somewhat.

A lot of people were rooting for Kansas as the upstart underdog to beat the big name football schools like Boise State did last year. It didn't happen for us, but next year we'll be ranked in the preseason, and have most of our best players back (please don't go pro yet Talib!), and we put up a good fight against MU on a neutral field, and they're the #1 team right now, so don't tell me we aren't a good team.
